www.ajc.com/news/news/local-govt-politics/atlanta-united-scraps-dekalb-site-in-favor-of-mari/npHsW/"Atlanta United FC has abandoned plans to build a $35 million soccer complex in DeKalb County and instead will build in Marietta, the team announced Friday. Citing site preparation costs that were far more than expected, the team and DeKalb officials said they reached “a mutual conclusion that the site is not a viable location for the complex.” The county was prepared to spend up to $5 million on land preparation, but team tests indicated the cost would exceed $20 million."

Ahhh. Okay so is the real story this - Georgia United (aka NASA and their sidekick clubs like UFA) gave up DA because you didn't need to DA teams in Cobb?

Makes ya wonder if Ga United becomes just UFA.
Wouldn't make sense for NASA/SSA players to leave their own backyards to train with the younger ga United teams. Still to bad we won't have 3 "clubs" with the 16s and 18s or what ever they call them in the future.
But why would we expect US soccer to make a smart decision. They are batting under .100.
It should be about opening doors and exposure not closing them.

Anyone know anything about the new area proposed? Is it north up 75 outside the perimeter or just north the 75/285 interchange?

Anyone know anything about the new area proposed? Is it north up 75 outside the perimeter or just north the 75/285 interchange? It sounds like it's up near Dobbins and Southern Poly, so north in the city limits of Marietta. Franklin Rd was known for some really bad run down apartment complexs so I think the city or county bought the land and was trying to revitalize it with something new. It's not a bad location since it's so close to I-75, Cobb Pkwy/Hwy 41 and the 120 Loop.

It certainly lets the DeKalb county taxpayers off the hook.
I will be interested to see what, if any, costs are being borne by the taxpayers in Cobb.

A couple of weeks ago, I was visiting SUNY-Purchase with my daughter who wants to play college lacrosse. It's also the site of the NYCFC training facility. They basically spent a little money upgrading some of the existing college fields and locker rooms and use the existing athletic department gym facilities. If a DIII college is good enough for an oligarch-funded MLS team, why doesnt AUFC look at GSU or Ga Tech?

Its more the fact that no one down here wants to share their toys. Otherwise the logical choice would be up in Flowering Branch with the Falcons. Ha! There I go again thinking logically again....

Certainly worth an inquiry to Oglethorpe or georgia perimeter or point university or many other sites that might be underutilized. They don't need brand shiny new stuff for training. That's all just ego stroking.
