Our academy has never, ever, done set piece practicing, free kicks or corner. Kind of sad if I may say.

Classic 1, embarrassed ☹️ At a minimum, there should have been some instruction on corner kick and free kick defense.

Absolutely none. Agreed there definitely should be. I think the boys mark a player for defense and get open for offense 😢

My daughter's U9 team probably scores half of their goals off of corner kicks. Nothing fancy, they just put 2 players on the ball, play quick, and dribble into the box and shoot. Catches opponents by surprise almost every time. They've scored as many as 3 goals in a single game that way before the opponents finally catch on and start defending it. They play most of their free kicks the same way - 2 players on the ball - short pass and dribble.

Very nice, I'm not sure if the coaches even care as this point in the season. Oh well, they must be focusing on development right, 😜;-)? This article was an eye opener for sure. Have you noticed how Atlanta United has been passing to the close player for all corners?

Yes, I don't think I've seen AU play a long corner yet (haven't seen every minute of every game though). I've seen a number of other MLS teams regularly play short corners too. Both of my daughters' academy teams do it - older daughter's team will play it long sometimes if opponents send 2 defenders, but they will play 2v1 if they only send 1 (most teams send 1 or 0 defenders so they almost always play short). My son's HS team has some really good corner kick plays. They've scored a handful of goals on them and had quite a few near misses. Some are short, some are long with a lot of movement and picks. They seem to work really well. Haven't seen anything special on free kicks though from daughters' teams or son's team.
