As a fan, I'd like to see it. But as a team owner, I can understand why they would not. Plus it will be a lot more difficult to get new teams to join if they know they can be relegated to NASL or USL. The franchise fee would go way down for new clubs and it's not what the existing clubs signed on for when they joined. Probably a conflict of interest for NASL team owner to have media rights for MLS as well.

It sounds great on paper. But there's no way MLS was going to sign a 10-year rights deal that takes effect in 2023. There's a chance they can get more than $4 bn six years from now, and there's no guarantee Silva would still have the money then.
It's at least a real start to these discussions (beyond angry twitter accounts). Silva knew this bid would never be accepted and probably put it out there just for the publicity. If MLS has more pressure on it now to do something about pro/rel, maybe they actually will when the time comes.

If clubs can compete their way up to D1, I'm more interested.

I'd love to see pro/rel in the United States from a fan perspective. But the size of our country just works against it and MLS owners will NEVER go for it. Not in a million years.
In my opinion, more important than pro/rel is getting college soccer to play by FIFA rules to bring it in line with the rest of the world. I also think colleges should switch to a 10-month season instead of cramming all their games in the fall.

I don't mind the substitution rules in the NCAA because it lets more kids get game opportunities and that's not a bad thing for 18-22 year olds. The clock counting down is a wash for me, if anything it's more accurate than arbitrarily adding a number of minutes to the end of the half.

Despite his bombastic social media habits, Ted Westervelt has laid out a pretty reasonable and complete "plan" on www.soccerreform.us

The only reason teams in 2nd or 3rd or 4th divisions don't have more supporters.. is the glass ceiling that separates them from MLS. When you can't play your way up, it's a disincentive to investors.
P/R is necessary. This particular publicity stunt offered an avenue for MLS owners to sell their teams to new investors. I'd love to see it happen, so American soccer players can compete in the global player market.
