A friend of mine was telling me and some others that their kid has been placed on a select roster and on an academy roster with other kids from their academy team.
By age - they are academy kids
but are great and so are being placed on a select roster to 'play up' and get experience and grow skills.
Does this happen a lot in soccer (georgia or other places)?
(one friend says you can't do this in GA- that once you're rostered UP you can't play down - another says it happens all the time and is a really good thing for all of the players who get this oppty).

It happens often but its not that widespread, you can play up but cannot play down for leaguw games.

This does happen. Our child played up all through academy. They played a season of select C1 with the older age group. We held them at age once their age group reached the age for select. They were rostered at age so could play with younger group when needed or tournaments. They club passed for the older team. We did find the parents of younger age did not always like when they played down as it meant one of the players lost playing time or were rostered back to a lower team for that day.

The player will be rostered with their age group and then club passed to the select team for games. This the only way the player will still be allowed to play with their age group. Unless the rule has changed, I believe the limit is three club pass players per game on a team.

I am sorry, I did not understand the situation or explain it well. These kids are not being guest passed 'up'
They are being placed on a Select Roster (not as guests)

But their actual team is the lower team, you can play up not down. Happens all the time

What is nice when clubs do this also for the younger academy teams -- let kids play up but not down. I've seen so many u9/u10 games, where a top team player from the opposition suits up against a 3rd team. (sometimes its necessary to field a team, often its not)

(sometimes its necessary to field a team, often its not) Gotta be careful what you are saying - I know what you mean but the "new to soccer" person could be confused. There are 2 kinds of up / down - Age and Skill Level. Soccerhouse is talking about up a skill level in this post. In clubs where players are pooled - there are skill level groupings. Some clubs are able to do what is being discussed - make sure the more advanced skill levels do not play in a lower skill level. That is nice and helpful for the still developing players. But sometimes it's unavoidable. I know it's probably obvious, but you can never play down from your age in regular season play. There are more nuances, but for the sake of simplicity, let's leave it at that. Tournaments are different beasts altogether as is rostering and age in U13 and older players. One step at a time.
