I was there in person back in 1994, was and still is to this day one of the greatest sporting events I've witnessed in Person. I did not get to see US play, but saw some amazing games.
The game has changed drastically since 1994, possession soccer is king. Back then it was a 4-4-2, now its a 4-5-1, 4-3-3 variation of a triangle in the middle.
Has our national team really progressed since then? Are we truly better than we were in 1994 when we got our of our Group on our home turf?
I don't think so to be honest. Are our current senior team players better then the Reynas, wynalda, brides, Popes, Ramos's,Meola's, Harkes, Balboa etc.
Meola played basketball and baseball in high school, he was drafted by the Yankees out of High school.
Eddie Pope is the greatest center back this country has ever had.
What did eddie pop do - he played normal club ball for a small club. he played ODP. He kicked field goals in high school, and later at UNC as well as played soccer. That would never happen in the modern era. He would be shunned by the local DA coaching staff.
We have too many rules and their is the problem -
build out line rule
no header rule
obsession with structure and player cards for 7 year olds
small sided rule, I like the mandate, but you know what if a club wants to play 11v11 at u8, freaking let them. Maybe they figure out a way to grow the game
rules for standardization across an entire country with over 325 million people
rules of having to be affiliated with state organizations (probably legal reasons why Not intended to be negative to state organizations!!!)
rules of not letting 11 year old u12 DA players play multiple sports
rules of not letting older DA players play multiple sports (can play, but can't play at same time I believe)
rules for not playing 2 full games in a day at DA younger ages with giant rosters
rules on substitution restrictions -- why do we have this for 13 year olds
rules on no re-entry after coming out of game -- again why
rules of no high school
rules of NCAA playing restrictions
rules of salaries for homegrowns
rules of salary caps for young players and non DPs etc.
rules for payments and failure to make payments
rules for not compensating clubs for developing players with transfer fees
I'm sure I missed a ton, but yes you need rules and regulations, but not rules and regulations that hinder a sports growth and progress.
