Everyone's thoughts on NL vs SCCL? I know there are usually a few threads that dissolve into discussions about ECNL, NL, SCCL, etc, but Im not sure any conclusions are ever agreed upon. This is a can of worms for sure. *popcorn* What I would REALLY be interested in - a pinned graphic that shows the different leagues at different age groups / genders. It would be spaghetti soup - but would help a few people understand all the different options.

Everyone's thoughts on NL vs SCCL? I think you need to say what age group and gender you are interested in. The quality of those leagues varies widely depending on age group and gender.

Would love to hear people thoughts on this in regards to this year U16 and U17 girls age group None of the top SCCL teams could compete with the top 6 NL teams in each of these age groups. The bottom 6 teams in the NL in these age groups would fit perfectly into SCCL. NL and NPL are closer matches than NL and SCCL.. SCCL is more closer to Athena A than NL. IF the top NL teams and NPL teams made their own league then it would be a really strong league top to bottom but as always $$ and pride gets in the way.

Completely agree in the u14 girls age bracket. Now in u13 edge to tophat SCCL only

That makes sense. NL is just the "renamed" RPL correct? If so it seems like NL vs NPL is the better debate, and I guess that depends on age/gender. Fair to say that "on average", NPL and NL are similar?

There is no way to answer this universally, because depending on the club, age and gender, a team from one league can beat another on any given day. Generally speaking, the clubs now a part of US Club Soccer leagues are the major clubs with room for a player to grow. The NL, which is USYS, is not necessarily earned by all clubs - some clubs play in the NL because the major clubs vacated their old, RPL slots when they switched over to US Club Soccer. There are exceptions, again depending on the club, age and gender.

U13 Concorde girls SCCL are really good also. NTH and CF SCCL 06 girls would likely beat all of the 06 NL girls teams except possibly AFC (this AFC team is doing better in NPL than NL). The other 3 NL teams at the 06 are not at the same overall level.

As it pertains to U14 girls. U14 girls NL had several teams that overlapped with NPL (Discoveries, AFC, CSA South). I think TH 05 SCCL and GSA 05 SCCL could be competitive with the NL teams. Some of the SCCL teams in 05 are weak and should be Athena B even. I think NPL and NL are more even in 05. CSA, Discoveries and AFC are doing similar in NPL as they did in NL.

Fair to say that "on average", NPL and NL are similar? ... and the SCCL is also just a "renamed" RPL, but for the big 5 instead. So you can compare the NL (Piedmont) to SCCL. In fact, it was one of the reasons why the SCCL was created. It makes sense too, since they had so many teams already in the old RPL... So the NL, NPL, and SCCL could be compared... at least on the girls side. For comparison purposes, I would say the SCCL is alot stronger than the Georgia teams placed in the Piedmont NL right now. And in the lower girls age groups, like atlfutboldad said, those TH and CF teams would be at the top of the NL and most likely at the top of NPL as well.

While I agree with your comments about $ and pride, I have to disagree with your first statement. At U16G UFA Norcross and Tophat would be very competitive with AFC and InterAtlanta. It seems to me that at least for this age group, the top of SCCL aligns with NL, NL aligns with NPL and the bottom of SCCL probably aligns with Athena A.

SCCL was created as a way to hide these teams, tell them the are "Elite" and charge them as such while keeping funds in house and out of GA soccer's pockets. In the age groups asked about 16 and 17 I guarentee you these SCCL teams would be crushed by Savannah, AFC, and CFC. In the 16s, AFC, Inter and possibly CFC would easily run through the SCCL. In the 15s Rush and CFC would not have 1 competitive game in SCCL. In the 14s Roswell is clearly beyond anything SCCL offers at the top of the league.. 13s and below SCCL has top teams from big 5 and would probably be the better teams. Now below the top 6 teams, those teams are SCCL level all day. To the person asking NPL is much closer to NL and it usually just depends on the age group, however overall teams that did NL and NPL had higher finishes in NPL but marginally higher so maybe slight edge to NL. With the National Tier available to the top NL teams I would say that moves NL in front.

And to do that, didn't they have to be the best in Athena A? And since many of the teams in RPL were from the "Big 5" doesn't that mean that many of those teams were good? ...So, when they started the SCCL league, your assumption is those teams all of a sudden went from "good enough to make RPL" to "downright sucking" as you describe? Finally, ECNL has been around for a while now, so we will leave that out of your excuse and go with DA being your reason the league SCCL was founded. Personally I dont think that because DA began just two seasons ago (at only two clubs mind you), that it was the "real" reason the SCCL was started. Btw, I didn't draw as large of a picture as you and say that all one league or the other is better, I said they are all comparable, which they are, IMHO. I get you that you seem to have a very slanted, one-sided agenda on this topic based on many of your posts, but we should all try to keep at least some objectivity for the good of those readers wanting to be informed.

Yes, there is a bevvy of alphabet soup of leagues that are available to players in the metro Atlanta sphere. I think that is a good thing. It gives you an option to choose or be chosen for whatever league suits your needs. Some are great based on costs and distance of travel. Others are based off of elite college recruiting, national showcases or a better than average chance at producing National Team players. I think we as parents in conjunction with input from our kids-the players, should look at the teams, coaches, environment, leagues and decide what is best to meet your needs. There are great players who move or stay based on location and traffic. For some, it's the commitment of your proposed teammates or the outside commitments that force you into a particular league. For some, believe it or not, the decision is based on the ego 😱😱 of the parents who want to brag that oooh my kid plays in league X. The one constant is this. On any particular day with the right particular players, parents, coach and collective, one can be the "best team" I think we should shy away from labeling one league the best and more importantly stop having these meaningless debates about it. As of today, if you take a U15 team on the girls side, between GSA/ECNL/NPL/SCCL/NL/RPL/SRPL/ABC/XYZ you have a minimum of 20+ teams who will likely not play each other. So how can you determine who is the best. I say focus on what makes you kid happy at a particular club, league or age group. Why did you go that route when you did and what would you do better or repeat in the future, knowing what you know...

Very good post. Bottom line is the plurality of all those leagues has hurt the players, competition has suffered from the top down: DA/ECNL: all those teams should be competing against each other, except those that will be found out they don't belong. NL/NPL/SCCL: all those teams should be competing against each other and the best should have a chance to compete against DA/ECNL while the weakest should be replaced by better teams. Give everyone a chance and earn it on the field every season. Have the best work harder instead of granting them permanent spots. Handing out deals, and club exclusivities are not good for healthy competition.

Putmeincoach says “SCCL was created as a way to hide these teams, tell them the are "Elite" and charge them as such while keeping funds in house and out of GA soccer's pockets Read more: gasoccerforum.com/thread/3912/nl-sccl-thoughts#ixzz5lrNSJJWWOR is it possible that some of the SCCL kool-aid drinkers liked that they could play several (14) equally matched teams with very little travel. What if “gasp” their kids just love soccer and want to play “competitive” which to some of us means good, clean, fundamentally sound, soccer with parity (few lopsided blowouts) in well run league. “Could” my kid play NL, NPL, ECNL? maybe? But if we like the coach, teammates, parents, club, price, travel commitments and opportunities, then I clukd care less what alphabet league name is assigned. I just don’t think you can compare league to league or team to team. For all the reasons everyone else has pointed out (top of one league versus bottom of another league, etc and age group variations and boys vs girls) Comparing NL to SCCL is just too broad a question.

As it pertains to U14 girls. so atlfutboldad outlined a chart style under frequently asked questions about GA soccer that sort of “lists” which clubs play in each league at which age group. is your specific question about the TEAMS in NL vs SCCL or is your question about what are the travel expectations and competition parity within each league, and current U14s or rising U14s for the next season? Or do you want to know which team in NL would win against which team in SCCL? Which league is better run? Which one has better bragging rights? LOL just kidding but seriously few people will have had current experience in both leagues based on how new SCCL is and who was selected for NL (also for anyone new there IS a difference between NPL and NL)
