I think Owen Barber is a 2003. Its not clear, but he looks like a tall kid standing next to his father and the other adult. Interesting hoopla surrounding a youth player signing to play with Atlanta United. Whats your opinion on this? I feel like this is signing day etc. Another out of town player coming to town. In a few years, the rosters will be loaded with kids from all around the south like we have been discussing. They already are.

Good for the kid but is anyone surprised? The notion they would have all local kids is a farce. This is just the first of many. It's all business about winning.

One thing I do find odd, when you here about kids committing to Atlanta United etc--
I bet the vast majority of the kids on the u12 - u14 rosters haven't even been told yet if they made the rosters for next season etc. Many who do and don't make it will not know their fate until that last night of tryouts or whatever ID sessions they host etc.
Used to drive me crazy, when on our team not a single player was told that they made the following roster yet, but someone shows up 1 night of tryouts for an hour and is told they have a spot on the squad, mean while not a single returning playing was told they were safe yet.

Barber isn't the only '03 they've signed from out of state, I've seen another one of these postings about a kid from Johnson City, TN. Looks like both kids played on a Regional ODP squad together back in November.
I get the feeling that these types of "signing day" announcements are more about the coaches and the clubs rather than the players. Mississippi Rush is probably very happy to have a player of theirs on an MLS team's radar.

Interesting news on Barber, he left AU's academy over a year ago - he just signed a USL deal with Charlotte Independence - seems odd given that Charlotte will have an MLS team, it's not clear if/how Independence will survive/thrive/exist - when the big boys bought there way into town

I am confused. Is he playing with Atlanta United or Charlotte Independence?

He was with Atlanta United till about 2 years ago when he moved to Charlotte Independence. Just this past week, he signed a homegrown contract with Charlotte Independence. Keep in mind, Charlotte is in the USL and not the MLS...
