Another game of Possession played by die Mannschaft. And another good example of long ball counter attack against it, by the Swedes this time. 75% possession, 3 to 1 passes, 91% accuracy, etc. I think Germany had 169 passes to Sweden’s 9 (yes 9) when Sweden scored.
It almost makes you question the CW of watching youth soccer. We’ve been trained to admire pretty passes and technical ability while abhorring boomball. For two games now, boomball has worked well on the international stage.
But what a finish though! Great free kick. And yes, the Swedes were robbed by that early no-call against Boateng in the box. I’m not a fan of him anyway. Not since his half-brother broke Ballack’s leg before the 2010 WC. Hopefully Hummels will be back for the SK game.

I think of "boomball" as mindless hoofing of the ball forward and hoping the big fast player will latch on to it and physically dominate. Sweden are not playing boomball. They are keeping an organized defensive shape then looking for an opportune moment (e.g turnover in midfield, a long clearance from a corner when the other team have pushed up their center halves) and then they have a plan to get at goal in 1-3 passes. This is a legitimate and thoughtful strategy that fits their personnel. This approach has been drilled obviously. They are organized in their attack. I see teams take this approach at the higher levels of youth soccer. I saw it yesterday. It is a legitimate strategy. Great teams can do this AND break another team down via playing through lines and keeping extensive possession. I also still see youth teams play what I am defining as boomball, and it is a disservice to the kids and the parents who are paying for a quality education. As an aside, I was following this match in a Redmond WA restaurant and the bartender was Swedish. Dude was devastated. He came out to our table to tell me what had happened. I thought he was going to cry.

Sweden was robbed of a pk opportunity. I thought the refereeing was questionable in that game. How does var miss that. Every person who commented said it was obvious. Makes you wonder...

Most definitely. The no call saved my bracket for a few more days but it was a very poor decision by the crew. Especially considering the use of VAR.

I also couldn’t understand why VAR didn’t catch it. Then I heard the commentator explain the reason behind the VAR no call. If the official is right there in a position to see the call, then the VAR should not overrule it. The VAR is more for when the official does not see something.

Makes total sense. Same for the no call in yesterday's AU game; when LGP blocked a cross with his hand while sliding in the box.
