For whatever reason, he's hit his ceiling with AU. Time to move on to another opportunity to get more quality field time if he's going to be a real pro. Not a knock on AC, I thought he contributed just fine when he did get on the main stage.

He is going to have to rehab his image. He could always count on getting an option to showcase his skills at the Nat'l Team level and world cup stage. It that goes away, i'm not sure what's next for him. He may have to go into the USL full-time to show what he's capable of. Or go to Europe and work his way back up through lower leagues. Finally, he needs someone to give him an honest assessment of his strengths and weaknesses to position himself for success.

An image consultant would do wonders -- but when you sign a 16 year old to home grown deal, the Club needs to take responsibility as well. What truly has gone wrong with his development?

I think his mistake was not in signing a home-grown deal, but in signing before the full accompaniment of players and most importantly the coach were chosen, hired and signed. You want a coach that believes in your and sees something in you. In turn he is more likely to push and develop you sooner to join the first team. The other home-grown players around the league that have flourished have been because they are identified and pushed up by the current coach. He may have realized that AU might not have been the place to sign, when you have the likes of Miggy, Barco, Gressel, Larentowicz, Remedi and Nagbe to contend with. I mean, technically Pity too is a midfielder. I feel for the guy and don't know what if anything he can do. Don't home-grown players sign a 3-5 year contract initially?

Alex Mendez is the “rock star” midfielder in this group. U20 National team has moved on.
Chris Richards, huge yet skillful centerback (kid from Alabama) will be interesting to watch.

Frank de Boer believes that Andrew Carleton (who missed out on the #USYNT U20 WC roster) has to become a better professional and limit off the field distractions. He believes Carleton can succeed.

He wasn’t in the 18 with 2s today either. Something must be going on off the field.

Ramos said missing those games hurt Carleton’s chances of making the final squad for this summer’s World Cup."

Interestingly -- these quotes are in the article also, so something has happened recently or somebody isn't telling the entire truth.... “His mentality’s been perfect,” ATL UTD 2 head coach Stephen Glass said recently after training. “It’s never been an issue. The days that he’s trained with us, he’s been great. He’s a young professional, he’s a good professional and he’s going to be a top player. So I wouldn’t expect anything different.” De Boer and Ramos agree with Glass’ assessment of Carleton’s mentality. “I’m very satisfied with his performance, his attitude, in training and also when he enters the game,” de Boer said.

Except when de Boer said he lacks focus in this AJC article. www.google.com/amp/s/www.ajc.com/sports/boer-carleton-has-quality-but-needs-improve-focus/eLbGDVwwYqoCuyPuibPTeK/amp.htmlIt does ALSO say he that he needs to improve his strength (aka hit the gym) and compares him to Daley Blind (not a bad person to be compared to IMO). Maybe he needs to watch the "in your face" videos that FG posted. He is still just a kid and if he buckles down and does the things he coach suggests I am sure he will be a success.

apparently, within a week, he is re-focused, I'm hearing Carleton made the trip with the first team to Vancouver. Seems to me the club is talking out of both sides of their mouth here.

Nagbe and Parkhurst did not make the trip due to fatigue. Who else was left to put in the 18?

I agree, but I just think if the issues are there, regardless of attrition of a roster, you either are good enough or not. I think its hard to judge the players with the 2s, it might be better this season, but last season it was every man for himself.

They almost always take 19 or 20 guys on road trips in case someone who's going to be in the 18 picks up an injury pre-game. But it's pretty clear he's behind 19-year old Dion Pereira in the pecking order right now.
Should keep in mind that Josef, Tito, and possibly Pity will all be going to Copa America this summer, and Jamaica could also pick Romario for the Gold Cup. So there's a lot of potential holes in the attack on the horizon. Opportunity does exist down the line.

I guess many would argue he’s been given opportunities with the 2s and in every training session. I thought he’s looked good with the first team.

He needs to play. Can MLS teams do loan deals like they do in Europe? Anything is better than not playing at all ATL2 level just not that great to be honest.
