Since the GA Soccer landscape has changed so much I wanted to get the real scoop on ODP tryouts.
Since the big 5 established SCCL the writing on the wall is that GA Soccer dislikes these clubs for being big bullies and seceding from the union.
With that being said, would it be worth it for first year eligible kid from a big 5 club to tryout? Will ODP blackball these kids? Apparently some of the big clubs didn’t invite ODP coaches to observe trainings to evaluate future players.
Black balled? Is ODP still prestigious or is it a joke now?
Thanks

There isn't a blackball or exclusion due to club.. for the boys age group I was involved with the last couple of years, approx 50% of players come from ECNL or SCCL teams.

Odd as I think most ODP coaches come from the Big 6 SCCL clubs. But I do believe Concorde has discouraged players from doing ODP.
Again, ODP is still very much political and still pay to play. It can be great for certain players though and a great experience but more a 2nd tier to the top players in Atlanta.

There are a few ECNL boys from our team that do it but the majority would rather have some free time. When you're playing as much as they do it's nice to have down time. I asked my son about it and he had zero interest, certainly does not have the prestige it once did.

Thanks I don't know if you'll get any help from blanket statements. If you have an 08 (assuming that's what you meant from "first year eligible"), you'll see some quality kids for sure. Maybe the "prestige" and quality diminishes as players in the older groups decide not to participate, but from around 05s down to 08s are quality. And if you look at the Georgia players that were selected for Region pool, you'll see some top players. Additionally, I know of several kids outside of the 08s that turned down DA and play in other alphabet leagues so they could participate in ODP and school, etc. Your kids will get some quality touches and be w/ some quality players. They'll have more time on the ball and get the hear different coaching voices. USYS has introduced a new format, structure, and selection process so they seem to be trying to bring back the relevancy as well.

Thanks Time and time again I have seen kids being cut from tryouts which could be from preliminary cuts to final cuts, to their kid making the ODP team at the end. From what I've been told parents would reach out to their coach or another parent on the team as reference and talk to the ODP coach or whomever. I would say ODP is best for the younger ages, as your kid gets older the experience is not the greatest. This could be from low turnout from coaches and players, to expense, to atmosphere/environment. Keep in mind many good players do not participate due to DA and ECNL and the fact it can be political on the selection process.

Atlanta area has 7 DA boys teams at the younger ages, so close to 140 kids. At older ages, there is still 3 DA programs, so about 60 kids. None of these top players in the region are allowed to do ODP. ODP boys was a big deal years ago, it is not today.

My children were invited to the summer trainings & Fall tryouts. Both had zero interest. I had less than zero interest when I was told that practices were in Conyers on Friday nights - at least for girls. I think that is correct

So starting with the 2008 group this fall, there is now one or two years with no player restrictions. It might prove to be good at least for those years.

I'm slightly positive on ODP if you have the right expectations - extra touches, different coach, get to meet other kids, play some different games. In terms of DOCs stepping in, that does happen. As a coach who has run tryouts, it's easy to make mistakes or overlook players with cuts after one session. When that happens, the player goes to the DOC who calls the ODP folks and says hey, you just cut my top striker on the first day, you might want to give him/her another look. DOCs have a limit to how many calls (and reputation) but the system allows them to correct glaring errors. I'm sure some will have a big problem with that system, but that's how the world works...

ODP, what a great way for your kid to get extra touches on the ball and play with some good soccer players. Yes, DA has removed some players, but It has allowed others to shine.
I've always said, " it's inexpensive training and your kid gets to meet other quality players in the same age group"
If you can manage the time and commitment, it's priceless!!!

I was told by a u12 ODP coach at the pre-camp that all of the “action” is in the defense as the backs and holding mid get the most touches based on the way they play. So no?

My D has not done ODP for several years but as a defender it was hard for her to make the team because ODP was more skills oriented and less into athleticism. This did motivate her to get some extra training and make the cut. I would say overall it was a good thing to do because it motivated her and after making the team let her play with and against a wider group of girls from other clubs thqt made her realise she could match up against the girls from ECNL. This was before DA. I would recomend doing it if you have the time and money.

i think it great for younger players. Sometimes you get better games (quality) and its a good way to get extra touches and even some scouting eye-balls. As you get older and don't play in the higher levels (DA,ECNL), it might be a good way to get seen if you feel you have been over looked.
My son had an amazing time as a goalkeeper with ODP. The 3 keepers chosen for ODP at 10 year old are now the 3 on Atlanta United U17 squad.
So the soccer journey is different for everyone. Your player will get out of it whatever they feel. Just support and encourage. Many different paths.

We know an 02 who is on the region team, and this is what she explained. 02/03s who made this year’s pool will have an opportunity to be selected for Thanksgiving Interregionals. From there, girls may make the NTC, and then the international trips. The 02 players won’t practice, but they are eligible for all of the events.

My keeper kid has participated in camps at AFU, UFA, Georgia, Clemson, & Southern Crescent GK Academy... but she felt that the ODP Regional Camp was the hands-down best. If your kid likes it more “real/mature” and less “happy/warm-and-fuzzy”... joining ODP and participating in their camp might be worthwhile.

Do the big clubs participate in ODP or are players from big clubs snubbed? Doesn't seem to be a lot of representation from them considering how many players they have.

Players from big 6 are not snubbed, if they make the grade they will make the cut. Many of the coaches are from big 6. I think NTH advises against it? Even for SCCL?
Mine tried out a couple years ago at U12 down in Henry County. I told her I wouldn't have her do it at U13, but at U14 this year she did and made it. In the 06 girls team that was just selected there are 6 ECNL and several SCCL, plus good players from smaller clubs. The tryout pool was very small though, 28 in prelims, I think that only about half of last year's pool tried out.
After having the same 2 coaches for 2 years at her club, I'm VERY excited for her to get coaching from a few different coaches. I would rather my kid see as many coaches as possible, each one brings a different perspective.
Most of our practices will be at Inter's Arizona complex, inside the perimeter.

The numbers don't bear that out on the boys' side. Just a quick look at a couple of age groups for boys - not much (if any) representation from NASA, CF, or UFA. That seems odd.
