I copied this line from the UFA Norcross thread, and it lines up with something I've been thinking about a lot lately...

Aside from families with unlimited funds who simply love to travel for soccer and having their kid in a "high status" travel league (of which there are plenty such families in ATL), has the NCAA rule change largely eliminated the need for ECNL and DA in the pre-U16/U17 age groups?
Mine is a trap year, so sophomore year of HS will be U17.
Having done a couple ECNL showcases last year (at U13), I saw zero purpose for such an event in our age group (aside from milking more money from clubs and parents). No college coaches were watching our girls. The aren't really even competing for medals or trophies. At least Greer was close, two nights, no flights, I think 1 day of school missed. Houston was 3 nights, flying, a missed day of school, plus a very average hotel around 30 minutes from the AVERAGE playing fields. We played in the Super-Y finals at IMG last year, and those fields are NICE!
So would that travel money be better spent on ID camps at U15?

Colleges are definitely looking at players at U15 ECNL and DA. Maybe not much before (maybe not at U14), but they are defintely watching games and contacting coaches about specific players at U15.

(my comments only reference girls) Ultimat you bring up a good question. I doubt the word showcase is truely valid. I think the biggest benifit for the younger age groups is to play against teams that are on your level but not in your geographical footprint. For elite ECNL or DA teams the Southeast may not offer the best competition so the showcase gives the teams a chance to play against like competition. Now here are some facts for the 06s. At the ECNL playoffs there were USA coaches at a couple of games. I think this info was used to select the first batch of 06 NTC players...

They are no longer supposed to even contact the coach of the player they are interested in until June 15 before the junior year. While the contact was common in the past it is not supposed to be happening anymore. Whether people will follow the rules is a different story...

Plus if you don't consider your kid likely to be the 0.001 percent likely to be invited to NTC, the NT coaches in attendance don't mean much other than to prop up the "importance" of the league.

Not following your comment... I was just stating the fact that at the 06 ECNL playoffs there WERE people with USA soccer there... My hypothesis is that is what lead to the GA NTC invite for some players. I dont have any insight, but can only report what I see...

I think atlfutboldad post was geared towards college recruiting and the need for the younger DA/ECNL age groups. If the kids that are trending towards college soccer at that age (no clue how you even tell at that age) cannot talk to college coaches, could money be saved without all the traveling with DA/ECNL? I was speaking with a former college player that works ID camps and they said the U14 and alot of the U15 kids (girls) arent even on college "big boards" with these new recruiting rules. Maybe if you are top 5% thats different? The NTC kids are even smaller select few so perhaps that could be done through ODP, etc without the need for younger DA/ECNL groups. Perhaps I read it incorrectly?

Playing Devil's Advocate here. For ID Camps, I have found that when you show up, the organizers place you on teams associated with whatever level you've played. So the better players tent to be grouped together. But I would think everything leading up to ultimately being offered a scholarship is based on the base foundation. So you start out at the younger age groups in these higher leagues. This helps teach you how to play at the highest levels and expose you to a multitude of styles of play. This sets you up to more likely be successful at the older ages when you're officially being looked at and put you in front of the coaches. Now there are ways to usurp the rules by engaging in activities like ODP and college camps at potential schools you're interested in. So by the time you get to June 15th, you have a opportunity to be ready to make an instant commitment and have a higher chance of getting more $$$
