So I have read various mentions on streams here of pending changes to National League for next season, wondering if anyone wanted to summarize those here? Locally, I heard potential of Florida being added to the current Piedmont Conference footprint. Anything else?

In a nutshell, it appears to be as follows:
Top 6 from Piedmont for the prior year Top 2 from Sunshine State Cup / Classic / Athena winner from GA, SC, FL and NC
That's a 12 team bracket depending on who wins State Cup in the various states. The language states they will take up to 14 teams per Premier I table.
Also, there appears to currently be questions about what will happen with the Premier II for the boys. Some interpret the language on the USYS site as no change will take place, others have interpreted it as Premier II will disappear entirely.

I think drop is a strong word. My guess is that any team that doesn't automatically qualify will be forced to reapply. And again, it will depend on who wins State Cup and or the state bracket. There's no guarantee that a team that wins it's state bracket will apply to play Piedmont Conference. In our age group this past season, no team from SC finished in the Top 6. So unless they bring in 3 new teams from SC, the two teams from SC would have to reapply for next season. They may get in, they may not. My guess is that they will be re-admitted. Where I think it gets trickier is when age brackets have 5 or 6 teams from a single state. Those that finish close to or at the bottom of the table may not get re-admitted due to the addition of the FL teams.

My understanding on the girls side is they are keeping the top 9 currently in the league (if they chose to remain in it), they will add 2 Florida teams, and then state winners of GA, SC, and NC for a total of 14. That language is currently in the current conferences operating procedures for Premier I (only one division for girls) with the exception of the keeping 9 vs 6 listed. All of this doesn't move forward until the next fall season (20-21 season).
From what I've seen though is FL plays HS in the Fall so not sure how that works out with GA, NC, and SC playing HS in the Spring.

What are the options for those teams that get bumped out of NL, just back to Classic/Athena? Apply to SCCL-1/P?

Like someone said, from the posted rules, top 6 from NL Piedmont are grandfathered in. Top 2 from NL Sunshine automatically qualify also. So that's 8/14. Everyone else will have to apply/reapply (winners of top bracket in state/state cup winner). Its almost a given that Georgia will have 4 teams in it at every age group. Everyone else will be relegated back to state leagues.

That should really help strengthen the piedmont conference as you get rid of the “dead weight” teams at the bottom that will drop back to Athena A

Most likely the teams dropped from the National League and the top Classic I and Athena A teams will form the new Georgia Premier League. I'm not sure if will follow NL rules or Classic/Athena rules with older ages on promotion/relegation, but it's already begun at 13U and 14U on the boys side.

So what's the purpose of the GA Premier League aside from being Classic I + / or Athena A + Are we just creating a new alphabet table and promoting everyone one level up? So the new Classic I / Athena A will be the old Classic III / Athena C?

With the introduction of SCCL, I think Ga Soccer created GPL as sort of a "marketing" gimmick. All the top teams have to be in an alphabet league or they're not top ;-)

So the new Classic I / Athena A will be the old Classic III / Athena C? Fair point but how far back do we want to go? We'll find out about Ga Soccer plans soon enough but I think there is more to it ... Word is Premier 2 in NL goes away, and a small GPL would be a better division than a big C1. GPL with less teams in division for better competition, longer season, direct promotion to NL, relegation to C1 etc, condition for promotion also w coaching license incentives for clubs and club requirements. From tourney results GPL level so far looks comparable to SCCL, and C1/C2 level is more comparable to SCCL-P. At 13U boys for example next best teams among big clubs like CF/UFA/GSA/AFU etc are mid C2 or C3. Exception is an SSA team from Decatur not part of the SSA curriculum, just the name, and a NASA team from Milton in C1. Is it possible something is changing with some smaller clubs becoming more competitive? Another indication of that, at 12U boys there are some interesting UFA tourney top division results between GA Soccer league teams and SCCL teams (would have been DA any other year) to compare levels of play in academy. One thing is for certain, there is plenty of talent around.

Not sure either which is more of a "marketing" gimmick between names like SCCL and GPL or how much it matters. More important than names, is reality. For those of us spending tons of time at the fields we see that the level of play and talent in both leagues in the younger age groups is deep with quality. It would be a shame for those kids to stop playing bc they lose their enthusiasm, or start to think they're not any good before even HS only because of being in the wrong place, lack of information or misinformation. At the end of the day continue to enjoy playing the game and getting better at it is what matters most, and ideally one day would be a single and better competition to help them all

For that matter, there's talent playing Rec ball for whatever reason. There's talent playing in non-sanctioned leagues... again, talent is all over. My joke was that Ga Soccer wanted their own alphabet league since that's where all the "top" players are perceived to be. Jokes man, jokes. And the point remains - GPL is what would be Classic 1. Teams in Classic 1 are what would be Classic 2 and so on and so on.

Always has been that way and will always be that way. Competitive players always look to challenge themselves. Now add AU along with big clubs and this furthers that smaller clubs lose the best. Always a rare exception but not many.

Reality is once you go past DA/ECNL they're all diluted alphabet leagues.

Always a rare exception but not many. Agree. Makes sense the best 12U talent will migrate to DA and ECNL from everywhere. But if a spot on those top level teams is not an option for us next year, no way stay to play on a lower team in SCCL let alone SSCL-P. US Club looks like a club convenience. Lack of parity, no promotion for winning league, and is clear big clubs don't seem to invest in coaching or pay attention to their 3rd or lower teams. In SCCL or SPL the level above 12U is comparable to C1. Example current Ga Soccer leagues 13U GPL and C1 not single team from a our club or other big club for that matter (one exception). Some in C2 but none promoted (technically C3) either and that speaks volumes. My point, there are much better options and better coaching available on the top teams of some smaller but good and reputable clubs (Ambush, Inter to name a couple) that can qualify for the National League. And while may not be DA, it's legit.

I'd encourage you to go watch top half ecnl. Smaller C1 or C2 nowhere close to them or even third team at bigger club. Been around soccer for 13 or 14 years so have seen a lot. Kids played up a year at smaller club for many years before going tut o a big 5 club at u12. Huge difference in talent top to bottom.

Reduce unnecessary travel for lopsided competition by downsizing and replacing some weaker teams with couple top FL teams for a merged Premier I for the region. They're looking for a single leaner/meaner NL with no more than 12-14 teams total in each age group and gender.

From the NL operating procedures page: 2.02 Premier I Qualification for 2020-21The Piedmont Conference and the Sunshine Conference will be merged for the 2020-21 seasonal year. The merged Conference format will include a single tier of competition (Premier I) that includes up to fourteen (14) teams. The Conference will qualify these fourteen (14) teams into the Premier I tier competition for the 2020-21 Conference season using the following criteria. - The six (6) highest finishing teams in each 13U-18U Premier I gender age group, according to the
standings of the 2019-20 Piedmont Conference season shall automatically qualify for their rising gender age group in their 2020-21 Conference. - The top finishing team in each 14U-18U Boys Premier II age group, according to the final standings of the 2019-20 Piedmont Conference season shall automatically qualify for their rising age group in their 2020-21 Conference.
- The top two (2) highest finishing teams in each 13U-18U Premier I gender age group, according to the standings of the 2019-20 Sunshine Conference season shall automatically qualify for their rising gender age group in their 2020-21 Conference.
- Any team from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida that qualifies for a slot in the 2020-21 National League shall automatically qualify in the same gender age group in their 2020-21 Conference.
- The State Association of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia will each receive one (1) qualified Conference slot in each 14U-19U gender age group for a team not already qualified into their 2020-21 Conference. Each State Association must use either their State League or State Cup competition to
determine their qualifying team. - Remaining Open Slots (up to 14) will be filled by Open Team Application, with review and acceptance by the Conference Team Selection Committee.
