I rushed here this morning with excitement, hoping to read your engaging and passionate comments about the Ligues Cup game last night in South Florida. Let's kick off the conversation! Pineda's decision to press and play high was intriguing, but it might not be a repeat strategy after the game's outcome, giving other MLS teams a blueprint of what not to do against Miami.
The performance of Miami GK, Drake Callender, caught my attention in the two games I've watched. His strong presence, including saving a weak PK attempted by Almada, resulted in the team's first clean sheet in almost 5 months. Speaking of Almada, he seemed unable to find his rhythm during the match and played timidly. However, the touching moments of his embrace before and after the game, along with a jersey exchange with Messi, were heartwarming.
Sosa's hilarious mishap, running down the tunnel to swap jerseys with Messi, only to get the Heisman, provided a light-hearted moment in the game. And what can we say about Sergio Busquets? His skillful plays in the middle of the field made it seem like he was conducting reverse rondos against our players.
Seeing Tata on the opposing side and Josef enjoying himself on the field is still a bit surreal. It's fascinating how soccer brings together such diverse and talented individuals, creating memorable and captivating matches.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts on the game and any other intriguing aspects you noticed during the match!

That was an utter embarrassment! I said after the 2nd goal that Pineda should have yanked at least 3-4 players right then and there before the next kickoff and send a message that the lack of effort defending (leaving multiple players unmarked) and the inability to understand the situational awareness would not be tolerated.
Messi and Sergio Busquets? are still incredibly talented in the older age, so it doesn't take much to make them look other-worldly when you match them up against a team that has a midfield worse than my local high school to play against (minus Almada). Arthur Blank should be embarrassed, the new CEO Lagerway should be embarrassed, and Carlos Bocenagra? should have a pink slip under his door because of it. He has been the single worst part of the destruction that has left this ATL UTD side in the condition it is in.
The good thing is, all we need to fix this is to get a mega-star to come play for Atlanta so we can get the privileges than no other MLS team is afforded, the MLS to apply the rules unevenly to give us an advantage over the all the other clubs, and we should be able to climb back to the top from wince Bocenagra knocked us down from.
How'd I do?

Complete and utter rubbish. Atlanta looked as flaccid as a wet noodle.

Newcastle spent time with the Braves Organization and showed off their baseball "skillz" That is slow pitch softball. It is hard to square how unathletic they look trying when playing slow pitch softball with how good of soccer players they are.

Looking forward to watching Miggy play tonight. So happy Miggy was able to deliver one for the crowd and his team. Too bad, Josef was not there to complete the Heart...

How'd I do? This right here. That first goal by Messi he was offside further than GG was on his one that was called back. It is clear from the start the referees were like little children with Messi around them all giddy. They weren't going to call anything against him even offside that was clearly off. Then VAR didn't either. It is clear MLS needs Messi and thus Miami to succeed here, so look for them to make the playoffs and maybe even win the whole thing. I am going to start scrutinizing the Miami games for bias referee calls and non-offside calls when clearly offside. Unfortunate for United that goal was not the difference. We were never going to win that game either way.

Now Suarez? How are they staying within the MLS salary rules?
At this rate, they will dominate for years. I don't see this being good for the league in the long run as other clubs and fans will be turned off with the inability of their team to compete and win versus a "super" club. Love watching the new Inter players but just not in a league they really are too good to play in.

And that's the thing about all of this... they have kept a salary cap, a DP cap, and all these other funky rules in MLS to keep parity in the MLS. Now, I don't have a problem with this being their goal (though I'm not a fan either) and understand they have been trying to build something sustainable, taking a longer path to creating an entertaining league... but they are just throwing away all credibility they had by allowing one team to usurp these rules. Either uphold the rules you have in place with all teams, or finally rip the constraints off the rest of the teams and allow them to pursue quality players that can compete fairly with the obvious hypocrisy that is the Inter Miami team.

Do you have any proof that they are not abiding by the same set of rules? I have not seen anything stating this, and I would think at this point there would have been some bad press about that out there. I was assuming Messi is somehow getting some lucrative endorsement deals and maybe a wink wink agreement that he will own part of the team when his playing days are over. I'm not sure that would violate any kind of rules right now.

I thought teams can pay DPs as much as they can afford. And then Messi is getting a special ownership deal and a cut of the AppleTV deal allegedly.
It seems like Dong Arber creates new accommodations along the way.
I dislike MLS but I am not too stubborn to recognize the coming of Messi is a major get. Having the greatest player of all time in your league is.. commendable. And a good thing. I do wonder if the exposure will backfire as the rest of the world sees exactly how Poor the rest of the team (and league) are relative to a handful of really good old dudes.

Messi is definitely a win much like David Beckham was… I’m not sure it has any lasting impact on the league-think Pele playing for the New York Cosmos.

Has the league made a deal with Messi playing on turf? Will he shrink his playtime at Atlanta?

Major League Soccer (MLS) fined Inter Miami CF a record $2 million for violating the league's salary budget and roster regulations during the 2020 season. The fine was the stiffest in MLS history. The violations included the incorrect roster categorization for players Blaise Matuidi and Andrés Reyes, who should have occupied a Designated Player slot. The league also levied a reduction in allocation money of $2,271,250 spread out over the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Managing owner Jorge Mas was fined $250,000. Former Inter Miami chief operating officer and sporting director Paul McDonough was suspended from MLS activities through the end of the 2022 season.
