Woke up to an email stating our portion of the tournament was canceled due to conditions of the field. TM said we could get 50% of our money back. Is this correct?

This is directly from the tournament rules. Link to tournament rulesNeither the Tournament Committee, Southern Soccer Academy, the Tournament Sponsors, or their agents and representatives are responsible for any expenses incurred by any team in the event the tournament is cancelled in whole or part, or in the event games are discontinued or cancelled due to inclement weather or adverse field conditions. In the event that the tournament is completely cancelled due to weather or other natural cause outside of the control of the club, teams will receive a partial refund of their entry fee. The actual amount will be determined once tournament expenses and other charges have been deducted but will be at least 50% of the entry fee. If the tournament has commenced, and a team has played at least one of its scheduled games, no refunds will be issued.

I remember several years ago when I was a TM, most tournaments' policies were that if you only got 1 game in, you were entitled to a prorated refund of entry fees. If you got 2 games in, no refund. That policy always seemed pretty reasonable to me. Not giving any money back if you only get 1 game in out of 3 seems greedy on the tournament organizers' part to me.

If I were the team manager, I would complain to the powers that be at SSA if you didn't play anything and only get back 50%. I can understand maybe for logistics etc... only giving back like 80-90% but most tournaments would give back 100% if you didn't play. Shame on SSA for that policy. Also in the past if a team drops out and you only get 2 games instead of 3 for showcases etc... they generally gave 1/3 back as well in most tournaments. With my recent bad experiences with SSA in the last few months, this does not surprise me in the least though. No more am I a fan of them...

Had the same experience years ago in terms of if a team forfeiting against us- got 1/3 of our entry fee back. Seemed fair & reasonable.

Is now an appropriate time to discuss the definition of “cartel?” Seriously- I don’t know the cost of the tournament, and do know that they incur expenses even if no one plays…but 50% seems like a lot to me. I guess if they had to rent fields and pay refs to come from afar maybe it’s not. 🤷🏻♂️

That is why I said maybe an 80-90% refund would be more in line. I can't honestly believe it cost them 50% of your money to do those two things.

Finally, 6 or 8 years ago, someone finally decided to take out insurance to cover expenses in the event of cancellation. Now, just about every tournament except for SSA gives a full refund if you play no games. I think that SSA will do something ridiculous too like give the team a credit for next year's tournament even though the players who paid will be different.
