My son is a u12 keeper and he may start playing up some with the u13's. He still would be playing with his u12 team. One day a week he would practice for 1.5 hours with his u12 team then, a hour with the u13's. Another day would be 1.5 hours with his u12 team. The third day he would practice for 1.5 hours and it would rotate between teams. Is there anything that I should be concerned about with this? I have already asked him and he is excited.

I usually don't advocate for players moving up to higher levels unless they are sufficiently skilled to start—it's a clear decision in those cases. However, I think a different approach applies to goalies. They need to learn how to defend against faster plays and stronger shots, as long as they can handle the physical demands or aren't at risk of injury due to their size. I would suggest to him that he take the lessons he learns and strive to replicate or apply them with his U12 teammates and opponents. The idea is not just to learn how to be better, but to grasp things so well that they become ingrained. Your job is to make sure you observe his interactions with the U13 players. Thankfully, boys only care if you can help them, so there is none of the drama about being liked that you sometimes see with girls. I wish him the best of luck!

Agree and our keeper son played up at that age too but I think the level of play matters as well. A good U12 team has better players than a P3 team even accounting for the age differences.

What level is the U13 team? It is a lower level team. Our club is not part of SCCL or ECNL.

Keepers should play as many games as they can. Cannot simulate game conditions for a keeper. If he can play up physically given the bigger goals, he should do it.

Kid played up until u13. This challenged him to stay with players a little bigger than him and with a year more experienced. We held our player at age once they hit the select age. It was also at that age that we moved our kid to one of big 5 clubs where he played on their top Ecnl team. I believe the early push prepped them to play at that level.

Play up for sure. Sounds like a great situation. I like the balance and he should develop from it. Rest days will be key. No extra training will be needed.
Tell him to listen to his body.
Have fun.

As long as he isn’t tiny in front of the full size goal, it seems like a great opportunity. From experience, having a tiny keeper at U13 is a hardship.

Yeah, bigger goal and bigger field is a huge change. We saw a lot of kids that were really athletic fail to make the adjustment because of their size. A year head start on getting used to that is awesome. For the OP, like I said earlier, our son played up on occasion for games but practiced with his normal team because it was arguably a better team than the older one he was asked to help As you know it’s a little different for keepers but all games are good and no one is designing their practices around you so get as much playing time as you can while staying healthy. my two cents at least.
