How does SG still have a job? Had a team full of talent with the 04s and with his coaching style they left in handfuls each of the last two years. He has TWO more younger groups, plenty of talent - can't win, I wouldn't doubt the talent leaves those age groups next. 06s lost their big talent (they still have some but not enough) the first ECNL year and never recovered. GSA snagged another one last year from them. 05s losing their striker to GSA was huge. Basically, GSA is on the winning end of the AFU struggle. GSA isn't 'stealing' them, the kids are leaving. Can't disagree, MM is legit.... If true, you've definitely made a case for MM. He has the 04's doing very well (ranked 20th in ECNL). But his 05s are struggling due to defections. Also, not the first criticism of SG I've seen on here. There was the AFU 05 2nd team state cup thing a couple years ago. Sorry I'm really only now getting into this. Heard there is an upcoming election or may be occurring as I type and someone on the board is trying to pack open board seats with friends and cronies so as to oust MM. I concur, from everyone I've spoken too, he is legit, knows the game but is being hampered by certain board members who are butt hurt because their kid is not on the top level team of her age group. Honestly, what the fridge, I can't believe the ineptitude of parents sometimes, is it too late to ban adults from being involved with soccer. To all you AFU families, I say get involved, know the facts and vote what's best for your team/club, if not you'll constantly be the bottom dwellers. I just hope the elections are not over and it's not too late... Stepping off Soapbox 😳😷😳

How long do you give someone? Check records of the top teams over the last 5 years. Follow players who left and how the teams they joined performed. Check transfers from other clubs. Were top players from top teams signed? The answers are probably pretty obvious.

Have a good point as if you look at the overall record over the past 4-5 years and add to that what was possibly lost, you have a case. With that said, there were other dynamics involved over the past few years that had to be dealt (will leave it at that). I am hearing that they are keen on a coach who coaches in a program to the north who I think would get the shipped turned around in a quick minute and is familiar with things but unfortunately do not think he would want the job but I could be wrong.

It also looks like if it was a single person causing issues on the board, the board could vote that member out.

I will say, I have no qualms getting rid of someone who isn't getting the job done. Folks spend too much money and these DOCs make too much to deliver mediocrity. Specifically to MM, I can't speak to him being successful or not as DOC, those on the inside with kids at the club will know better than me. However, when you start to hear about shenanigans regarding board members with a personal agenda that is contrary to the needs and goals of a club, I think it should be called out. If you as a board member don't feel he's doing a good job, straight up, call a meeting, present your case, get a majority vote and relieve him of his duties. For the record, it's literarily part of their job/mandate btw. Additionally, I do know a couple of years ago the Vacuum cleaner was still in-charge and he was the Big Top Ringmaster of a Shizat Show. I saw firsthand how inept and shady he was when interclub events brought him into my sphere. Could the current failures AFU is experiencing be a holdover from him? I'd honestly like someone currently at AFU to maybe speak more about that. So that brings up the question, how long should a DOC have to turnaround a club before we can label him as a failure? I don't know MM personally, have never had a kid play for him and don't gain anything if he stays or goes, but I've heard good things about him as a coach. Many on here have previously said there are coaches in the AFU stable that need to move on. This calendar year we're currently in, I know of 2 coaches he wanted to hire who are both highly regarded on this forum but couldn't. They weren't comfortable discussing the details but I got the feeling it wasn't because the interviews didn't go well. Keep him, dump him, makes no difference to me, but let's not use some chicken-shizat way chiefly to baby someone's hurt feelings because they can't brag that junior is on the top team...

Since you are so aware of the AFU management, who was 2nd in command while “he who shall not be named” was running the club into the ground? (Answer: MM) The BOD ousted the vacuum but granted a pardon to anyone that stood by and watched as he did his damage. There needs to be a culture change if AFU is to ever to get back to what it once was with Miller at the helm. I’m not saying MM isn’t capable of making that change happen, but it’s been over a year since the board took control back and handed MM the reins. You are exactly right that these DOCs get paid too much money to not be held accountable and at AFU it is the board’s responsibility to do just that, but unfortunately when you have board members with their own agendas, making demands on what the club can do for them and their kids and not what I can do for the club, dysfunction is the end result. Do you know how many AFU board members are also club employees and as a result, MM is their boss? There are too many conflicts of interest for the current board to function soundly. Just my opinion...

You also have to look at what a board views as success. It seems this thread views it improving their first teams (ECNL) to compete with some of the best in their league, which also often happen to be some of the best in the country. But do most boards see success as how their top teams compete and what leagues they have access too? I think most would view success more based on overall player numbers and the financial picture of the club.

AFU has a long way to go to deal with the financial situation left behind by the vacuum and his cronies. I think it took around a year to get back in the black overall (there were no financial records being kept). There's been speculation that CF and NTH have millions in the bank, AFU is not in that position at all. Not getting to have the tournament last spring hurt even more as the money raised from that would have helped the club really start to get on its feet again.
Overall success should mean the growth of the club. More families, more $$$ to invest back into the club. It will take time and investment, quite simply. Vacuum really ran things into the ground and there is evidence he used club coffers as a piggy bank. It remains to be seen if MM can guide the club out of the mire.

Coach contracts should go through the end of the year. HC is a good coach. I realize your team has had a rough year though.
Overall the SCCL teams are doing pretty well. But overall, wins and losses are about players moreso than coaches. Coaches can teach and motivate, but in the end the players have to execute. You get a few top players on a team and voila, wins.
No idea who will be let go.

Coaching contracts do go through May but for U16 and Up a lot are wrapping up and won’t be back in the Spring. Especially if contracts aren’t renewed in April.

Yeah, we haven't had any issues, we are new to the club this year though so not up on the politics yet. We had a rough start, the girls were starting to click and then shut down the last two weeks with a covid exposure so hoping to still finish mid bracket, 4 games yet to play and they should be wins except probably 1. We shall see! Coach contracts should go through the end of the year. HC is a good coach. I realize your team has had a rough year though. Overall the SCCL teams are doing pretty well. Players should NEVER pay their coach for "extra" training. Clubs should never allow this. Kid played 14 years and never did this. Bad practice. Conflict of interest.

Politics, bad coaching, no direction and all the shenanigans you are mentioning is not really AFU's main problem. They do not have the Talent, plain and simple to compete with UFA, CF, GSA and Nasa/Tophat. It's not going to develop champions, there will be an occasional outlier which is a top 3 team but it will be rare.
MM is a very good coach but not a great coach. They have some good coaches at AFU and the parents are mostly good folk. AFU was good for my kids, local, gave them a chance to compete and develop character. It's hard to give scholarships at a club when you're not rolling in money, KSA is the only club I know that gives tons of scholarship, but every year they are struggling to survive.
AFU does hold onto some players because of loyalty and do not always select the best player on their top teams, but you can't fault the loyalty when a kid has been there since u8.
12 years involved in this pony show, please enjoy the ride because it is shorter than you think. If you get hung up on top teams you will miss the most important aspect and that is the growth of your child. Just look around, Atlanta is a great, great soccer city but you don't see us loading up the professional ranks with players.

Agree with poster that the years go by quickly. Unfortunately for us our kid had a stop at this club during the previous leadership regime. Fortunately we left and ended with a fantastic coach and group of players. I hope others find what we did.
