What are honest opinions about Ted at Tophat?

My kid thrived with him as a coach. Tough but fair and built an amazing soccer foundation for her.
Now I’m going to go grab some popcorn and sit back and watch the fireworks that you even asking this question is going to create!!!
Ready in 3, 2, 1 ...

Only coach I’ve ever heard made a 10 year old girl pee her shorts because she was too scared to ask him to go to the restroom during a game.
But if you’ve got a top notch athlete he will make them a great player.

But if you’ve got a top notch athlete he will make them a great player. This actually happened. He doesn't follow any of the safesport rules regarding harassment or emotional abuse. Sits on his tiny chair writing in his little black book belitting players, opposing coaches, leagues, etc. etc. etc. He has some good coaches under him, unfortunately, many are learning his "style." And the last thing soccer needs is another uncaring coach who poaches players developed by other clubs. Plus, although nothing to do with his coaching, he can't hold a normal a conversation with an adult (even when he initiates it). Its almost like if he cannot intimidate you, he cannot communicate with you. There are several coaches who seem to have NO CLUE how to communicate with parents. I am all for the kids doing the best they can to communicate for themselves but parents need to be part of the solution not a problem so these coaches need to learn how to talk with adults.

I honestly don't need a coach to communicate to me directly during the season unless its very specific about my kid. Matter of fact, I get much more concerned when I see coaches publicly communicating directly with certain parents rather than using simple resources to communicate a message to the entire team/parent(s). Start of season, huddle parents together for a quick overview of expectations for the season, after that be consistent and be professional.
A good coach certainly doesn't translate into personality and in many cases its painfully obvious they simply don't have the basic skillset to do so. All I ask, is that you are developing and communicating constructive feedback to my kid. Now if you make my kid pee on themselves.. then there wont be much need for talking after that anyway.

A family goes to a circus. One of the acts is a bear riding a bicycle.
Son turns to the dad and asks how they trained the bear to ride the bicycle. Son, says the Dad, they nail it's feet to the pedals and beat it with a 2x4.
That's Ted.

Probably has the most amount of academy players that sign college scholarships in the state...

That seems pretty consistent with the bear story and a decision that the end justify the means. You would also be hard pressed to attribute a kid playing in college to any single coach. Most of time, it is the player and the time that they spend working on their game outside of the practice, the parents, and then a vast array of trainers and coaches that end up with a kid playing in college. For us, playing in college is not on a top 10 list of reasons why my kids play soccer, now or at the academy ages.

So it’s happened at least twice then because this was during a game, Tournament too pretty sure.

This forum certainly brings a smile to my face. I’ve seen him coach. Since I don’t have firsthand experience with his style in general (what I saw from him was appropriate), I will assume that many commenting do not have a child in little tyke football (tag or contact) or competitive gymnastics. Talk about crazy coaches! 🤣

Talk about crazy coaches! 🤣 So I agree with your statement that crazy coaches are present to a larger extent in football and gymnastics, but I would say that those coaches should be removed from coaching. Like the guy that hit the little kid multiple times and knocked him down. Or one of our friend's kid's team where the coach of a 6 year old grabbed a kid by the face mask and swung him around off the ground by it. Both of those guys should do tons of community service (away from kids), anger management and lifetime ban from coaching at a minimum. Many gymnastics coaches are reasonable until you get to the very elite level and then you will see a lot of bad stuff too. But in case you have not noticed they are trying to stamp out that behavior. It is not appropriate at all. My kids have never had Ted. We have never been out of Buckhead at younger ages. I have friends whose kids have had him and done ok with his style but he is known to be very hard and many people do not handle it. The players are great but whether that is cause and effect I don't know. Great youth kids are coming into Tophat throughout the academy ages.

I agree.
My older daughter does competitive cheerleading. There are a lot of mean coaches in cheer. Some seem to think that’s the way it has to be to be successful. But that’s not true IMO. This season (that just started) she has 2 great coaches who actually coach/teach instead of yell & threaten. She says that makes her improve more.

My daughter played for Ted. Is he warm and cuddly...no! Does he want the girls to improve and play at a high level....absolutely!
Our family is not from the Buckhead area. I grew up in a totally different manner from that area. Nothing against the people from there (we are friendly with them), but they are use to being treated in a certain manner. They are not used to someone with his demeanor. And I understand why he is not buddy-buddy with parents. I think this creates a certain belief about TC that is unwarranted.
He runs technical sessions during the summer open to ALL Tophat academy players and they are very reasonably priced. He tells players when they do bad. He tells them when they do good. He always expects his players to practice hard and he instills a work ethic in them. It is a hard lesson for some kids and parents to learn. Especially when they are more used to doing things their own way. But TC lays the foundation for a lot of the success Tophat has at older ages and for girls that leave Tophat for other clubs.
I am not trying to be disparaging of Buckhead people. Sometimes things are just a clash of two different "cultures" for lack of a better word. Most parents and players take it as a source of pride when they come through his academy. They see it more as a life lesson for the girls. And sometimes things get embellished to make it seem worse than it really was. Did a young girl pee herself? Maybe. But was she really intimidated by TC or the image of TC? I remember my daughter telling TC she had to go right before a game. Was he annoyed? Maybe. But he told her to run and hurry back.

Most Buckhead parents take pride in their daughter going through the academy ages with TC. They learn a work ethic and how to hold themselves to a higher standard. Most parents in Buckhead did not grow up there. They got there by having a great work ethic and holding themselves to a higher standard in their given profession. Does that clear it up?

The majority of Buckhead is absolutely generational wealth and not "work ethic" wealth. They got there because of their country club contacts and parents paid for college so no student loans. Please. Stop. No one believes that nonsense. Buckhead full of bootstrap hard workers. . There is maybe one person who "got there by having a great work ethic."

My daughter played for TC. We are not Buckhead people. We have worked hard for our success in all venues. There is motivational / appropriate / disciplined coaching, and then there is something else. TC crossed the line with my player more than once. As I told a school administrator once regarding inappropriate comments made to my child, there are things that only parents are allowed to say to their children. Coaches, teachers, whatever, not so much.
Not a snowflake, but recognize mental abuse when I see it. I was less stressed during boot camp than my daughter was before practice sometimes.

This forum is funny. Many times after a long stressful day I can count on the forum to provide for a good laugh before bed. Someone asks about a coach and somehow we end up insulting people from Buckhead, then the Buckhead people fall for the trap and say how they are good hard working people ( which I believe most are .. but it’s still funny) Now- there is a conspiracy that a coach who has been getting hammered for weeks creates a post about another coach to cause a distraction away from him....lol .you really just never know where a thread will lead. I think tomorrow I am going to just post a question about some Coach I don’t know or could care less about ( I will just google random coaches) and see where it goes. Maybe it will lead to us insulting people who like Chinese food or those who drive SUV’s. Lol

Most people in/around Atlanta are not from Atlanta. Many are from the northeast. I know a lot of “half backs.” They left NY/NJ and went to South Florida…way too hot so they moved half way back …and settled in Atlanta.
