Our experience at SSA Lakepoint has been the complete opposite to the few who have commented here (I’m not good a quoting, but you can see their comments), so I felt the need to share our experience. I’ll start by saying try it yourself and make your own opinions. My opinions are next:
The director and coach that was mentioned have been nothing but great. And we’ve had a ton of experience with both and not once has anyone else said different. And volunteers are just that - volunteers. To think they’re anything than just a mouthpiece for the coach to help communicate and organize things is just not accurate.
As for the director - he looks intimidating and if you have never talked to him personally then I can see where you could get the impression that he is stand off-ish, even though it’s a wrong impression. He’s got that high and tight cut and looks like he benches about 400lb. But, after about a 2 minute conversation you will see that he cares deeply about the kids and is really an incredible coach. You don’t do what he has done for all those years by being a jerk, or mean, or however you’re trying to paint him. He’s coached countless games for us and not once has he been rude or berated a ref, especially a kid. In fact, he’s always reminding the parents to be quiet and respectful. Based on your comment it’s clear you’ve never talked to him personally or had him coach any of your kids.
As for the other coach mentioned - in all my years being associated with youth sports (not just soccer), I have not seen a coach who cares more about her kids than this coach. Is she young and pretty new to coaching? Yeah, and so is your kid to soccer. But she knows what she’s doing and the kids love her. So what if they run a little at practice. It’s soccer. Last time I checked, you have to run to play. And at that age they need to burn energy before coming home. I’ve seen the practices. If you expect some high level, technical practice with a bunch of 7/8 year olds then your expectations will never be met wherever you go.
Again, try it for yourself and don’t go off anyone else’s experience - good or bad. And as with most things in life, if you communicate instead of assume and judge, you’ll be better off.

His daughter is the coach that was being discussed. Can't blame him for being on edge, it's tryout season afterall. Just protecting his club, his kid, and his all expense paid trips to the World Cup paid for by youth soccer. LOL.. You think you have it figured out and I am happy for you. You are a coach more than likely and you are expressing your feelings on here. You think you know me then call me and let’s discuss. It’s all good. As I have stated lay the fees side by side and you will see. The ghost of Steve Gummer what a happy name. What a means by which to identify your self. Steve is a good dude and he understands well the way this game is played. Good luck to you my friend. You were a problem here and will be a problem there. Time will tell. God speed my friend.

IamwhoIam, if you are trying to defend SSA and its coaches from their critics, you are doing a terrible job of it. My kids will likely never play at SSA anyway, but just knowing there are people like you at the club will make others stay away as well.

Our experience at SSA Lakepoint has been the complete opposite to the few who have commented here (I’m not good a quoting, but you can see their comments), so I felt the need to share our experience. I’ll start by saying try it yourself and make your own opinions. I couldn’t agree more with your last sentence, and I’m glad to hear you’re having a positive experience. The coaches I observed just didn’t really seem like a good fit for where my kid is at. I wasn’t sure if it was that they were maybe used to coaching boys, older kids, higher skilled players, or what. They just seemed easily frustrated when a kid didn’t understand what they were being asked to do and didn’t do much to turn it into a teaching moment. Instead, it was mostly just shouting the same command at the kid two or three times. That made my kid feel stupid, which made her cry, and my kid can’t/doesn’t learn anything while she’s crying. You can believe me on that, lol. I don’t think that’s anyone’s fault. Just didn’t really seem like a good fit. As for director, I don’t know the man personally and have never seen him coach. I do know that a boys coach I regard very highly gave the man’s coaching ability a stellar endorsement. The coach who gave the endorsement is a no-nonsense guy who calls out mistakes and poor behavior and then moves to correct it. I don’t have a problem with that, at least not on principle. If that describes the director, I’d have been more enticed to stay if I thought he would have been the one coaching my child. I’ve been around long enough to recognize that directors don’t coach the lower teams unless that’s all they have. The situation with Tophat LakePoint looks like a perfect opportunity for my kid. They have just enough girls to field a team and the skill level is a healthy mix. I’m hoping that this smaller scale experience will help grow her love of the sport. I hope you have the experience as well.

Thanks for all the opinions guys!!! We got the “official offer letter” today and will keep our fingers crossed and go down this path. We are excited to see where we go from here though.
