Super Y tryouts are coming up, is this worth losing summer weekends right before the start of 9th grade??

We did super y in the summer, personally I don't want to do it again. The competition we got was not very good and we played up a year. It kept my kid active during the summer but I was ready for it to end. we played 12 games and there was one other team that was good...there was 6 teams so we played everyone twice. Games are not just on the weekends btw, we had lots of games during the week too. They were all local teams so there wasn't much travel outside of metro GA. We also had kids from other clubs play with us which was nice and different, but we also had a big roster to allow for people to travel in family vacations. If you end up in the top spots you will also have nationals at IMG in December.
If you have nothing else soccer related planned for the summer then give it a try, we had to juggle different activities so for us it just wasn't an ideal situation.

my kids typically end up playing through most of dec/jan (whether permitting and indoor), so i like to give them end of june/july as a break. with state cup/regionals, camps, tryouts, your kid can be playing into mid june. i feel they need a brake. Not necessarily fear of burnout, but let the body rest a bit.
before you know it, its august again....

We did it at a different club and I think it gives your kid a chance to meet other players and see how other teams practice. The competition wasn't great, but the practices were a good opportunity to keep in shape. They were much more flexible about missing games/practices due to family travel, etc. and keep a larger roster because of that.

Ok what is age is super Y? And where can one find more info about tryouts and whatnot? Check with the individual club websites. Teams in the metro area are usually run through UFA, AFU, SSA, Ambush, and I think there are a couple of others. This year Super Y ranges from u10-u14. My eldest played last year and made some new friends from super Y. My youngest really wants to try out try out this year. We also did the 3 v 3 tournaments last year throughout the summer. Those were a lot of fun!

We were are UFA Norcross tryouts tonight, and I was surprised how few U11 boys. 1. I didn't see any U11s from the top team. Why is this? The top players don't do Super Y? What do they do instead? 2. Why isn't UFA Forsyth doing Super Y this year?

I am guessing if the top U11 boys want to do it they are already on the team. Forsyth web page says Super Y information coming soon.

Zizou...they are teams as young as u10 doing Super Y. My youngest is doing it and she's u9. Her coach encouraged her team to try out. I'm on the fence a bit. She will already be busy on a swim team during the summer but soccer training and games with a mix of different teammates during the summer might keep things fresh for her soccer-wise. The rosters are big so taking a game or a practice here or there is expected during the summer. It will be our first year so I'll know more at the end of the summer.
Here's the blurb on the Super Y website adding the u10 and u11 divisions and their reasons for adding them...
EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH: NEW U-10 & U-11 Brand New U-10 and U-11 Divisions Provide Clubs a Chance to Develop Players earlier. In response to the feedback that has been received and in order provide the best foundation for clubs to develop players, the Super Y League is excited to announce the addition of the U-10 and U-11 divisions in the 2015 season. By involving players even earlier in the process, it allows them to receive the exposure to the level of competition that is present in the league, while still providing the proper environment for them to improve as players. The synergy of these two elements will provide a smoother transition into the advanced levels of the Super Y League, as teams compete in the North American Finals.
The players will develop even faster with the nutrition, mental condition, and personal growth education provided by Super Y League partners, IMG Academy, and club coaches will benefit from the added technical and tactical information provided by our National Technical Director.
The Super Y League offers a unique opportunity by being able to provide your club with multiple benefits in a variety of forums.
Players benefit from a league platform that allows them to be seen by college coaches so they can advance to the next level of play. Clubs benefit from a summer league structure that allows the Super Y League to compliment current competition curriculum. Clubs benefit from a professional operations staff to assist with the season structure and scheduling. Clubs benefit from the Super Y League communications staff that can assist in building your brand through our various social media and communications outlets. Teams benefit from having the opportunity to compete for a North American Finals championship at the world-class facilities of IMG Academy.

Very few girls for U14 and U15 at Norcross. Guessing everyone will make the team. Don't know why they do Super Y tryouts this early. Regular team training has yet to start. If the first team players from U14 and U15 want to play, I doubt they need to come to tryouts. Guessing they will hold another event later in Spring just like they did last year. I would also like to see them combine teams across age groups, e.g., have a U14 squad that is best players from U13 and U14. No need to have a team for each age group.

I think a combo team may be what happens Zizou. 13, 14 and 15 were grouped together. I agree, let practice get started, and some grils from our team are playing school b'ball and couldn't get there. Should be interesting.

Yeah, you're right. I see UFA Forsyth published their Super Y tryout information today, and they will not be forming teams for the new Super Y U10 and U11 divisions. They will just have the "Pre-Super Y Training" (practice but don't play games). Some clubs will have true U10/U11 Super-Y teams (e.g. AFU).

Here is their press release: supery.uslsoccer.com/home/828867.htmlUFA Norcross had tryouts for U10 and U11, so apparently they will be playing games, not just practicing like UFA Forsyth.

I've always referred to it as "Super WHY?" (My apologies for not contributing anything significant to this discussion, but I had to get that out of my system)As far as I am concerned, there are 4 possible reasons: (1) if you are considering investigating a different club and they have this program then you go to check it out and then the coaches know who you are come tryout time, (2) if you like your team, and have no intention of moving clubs, but you would like the opportunity to play on a better team and train with better players for the summer, assuming of course that the super y team has better players than your regular club team, (3) a chance to go to IMG in December if your team qualifies and that kind of thing is important to you, and (4) if you show well in games but not do much in a time limited tryout format like we have here for ODP in Georgia (not many states take this kind of approach by the way) and you are a good enough player, maybe you get recognized and make their ID list. Then you get to go to IMG for their ODP camp and get some exposure. There are some decent reasons right there dude. Maybe there are others. Let's hear your list of why kids should not do it. This will provide an opportunity for you to add to the discussion. You are welcome!

SUPER WHY? Kid's bored and wants to play some more soccer in the summer.
SUPER WHY-NOT? If the kid's been playing soccer all fall, winter and spring he probably needs a rest or some other sports to help balance muscle development. As a coach I like when my players have not been playing in July. The come back in August itching to kick a ball and get going again.
(OK - not much but at least some contribution)

These were the same reasons why we were on the fence about doing it with my youngest. She's still so young (9) and will be coming off a pretty long year soccer wise (She played in 27 games just in the fall season counting tourneys) and her team is going to be split into two teams this spring that will play other clubs 1st and 2nd level teams which could result in her playing in even more games than in the fall. She wanted to do it though and she really loves not only the game but the camaraderie with her teammates. I hope she doesn't get burned out come next August as club soccer starts all over again. We'll take time off for a vacation during the summer and they do account for that by carrying such large rosters but it still could be a bit much.
Forgot to mention that it was a pretty decent turnout at UFA-Norcross for the little ones. Had around 20 to 25 kids there in the u9-u10 group and I'm sure there are a few that will play but couldn't make it to tryouts.

As a college athlete myself, I was so burned out by my High School Senior year that I almost didn't play in college, and I didn't play nearly as much as these kids do nowadays!

Excellent feedback on this topic as I have 2 little ones in Academy. They both love the game, being at the fields and their team. I am not sure as to have them do Super Y because fear of burnout and lack of commitment due to summer vacations. As a parent it is a good break for us too!
During off season in winter and summer we will continue to participate in futsal, 3v3 tournaments, and camps. I believe it is a good way to stay involved in the game in a different way.
