Couldn't make it to the silverbacks game on saturday night, but watched on ESPN3.
1. huge props for NASL getting these games on ESPN#
2. the actual presentation on ESPN3 is almost unwatchable though. the feed is like watching an old vhs tape. the actual camera work is not very good, zooming at the wrong times etc. the graphics are from the 80s. I get it they don't have a lot of resources to put on a top notch presentation, but man, its like watching a high school football game in standard def on an old tube tv....
3. while they "stole" a tie, it was not a pretty game to watch. It might be the turf, because the portland/seattle game last night in my opinion was not any better on the Seattle turf.
4. I'm not for promotion/relegation for US soccer because of the current pyramid scheme they are charging new ownership groups to buy in. In the US if a pro team got relegated, the team would fold financially. I don't' think the US pro system can be compared to Europe where there is a hundred years of history for these teams and everyone is born a passionate fan for their local team. Its just a different beast. However, top USL/NASL teams should be considered targets for expansion. which brings me to point #5.
5. Minnesota is moving up the big boys MLS in the future and they currently sit #10 in the NASL. San Antonio has also been desperately wanting an MLS squad and they sit at 11 of 11. Neither off to a fabulous start to the spring season.

I went to the game. It was ugly. The Silverbacks seemed to have a game plan of 'clear the ball high and long' at almost every touch from almost everywhere in the last 2/3 of the field.
Possession? None of that nonsense. Just kick it long.
This is in contrast to the other games I have attended and watched, so it must have been a strategy to deal with the Cosmos who are quite strong.
If pro/rel were to happen, maybe the promoting teams would have to buy out the MLS franchises of the relegated teams. Maybe it's just promotion OPPORTUNITY and a forced sale of your franchise if you get relegated and someone decides to buy their promotion. Just a thought.

Hah, what can you do with urban legends?
It was a great game from a crowd standpoint... standing room only, with all the rails around the field completely filled with people. And for the most part people were pretty into the game.
I wish it had been a little more attractive soccer.

I was at the game too and I know it looked like really unattractive soccer but, having been to a lot of Silverbacks games over the years, they are actually a little more enjoyable to watch this season.

I completely agree... this was the first game I thought was not very well-played, from a 'good soccer' point of view.

I was there also and echo the sentiments that I wish they would've played better soccer but glad the Silverbacks got a point and finally didn't lose to the Cosmos. Cool to see Raul play. Not every day you get to see someone with those credentials play at your park. Hope to see some more games this year. Its always so much fun. Love hitting the ball around with my kids on the field afterwards.

Love hitting the ball around with my kids on the field afterwards. I was really torn about the outcome. It was nice to get a point against the Cosmos, but on the flip side, the Cosmos sit at the top of the table and will likely stay there. Going for the win might have been risky, but beating them might have been the Silverbacks' only chance to win the spring season. After the Cosmos game was amusing... they kept trying to keep the fans off the field but they were pouring on faster than the police could shoo them away. And the announcer kept saying "Thanks for your cooperation in staying off the field" while people were jumping the barriers.

It was funny watching all the fans leaping on the field immediately after the final whistle to try and get to Raul and to hear the announcer in his failed attempts to keep them off. Never going to happen lol. Wish they would've won too as I also think it was their only chance to challenge for the top spot. They did have a few chances at the end but seemed to be very cautious to avoid the counter.

The game plan was clearly to play tight defense for the silverbacks. They did that well. They were really lacking in the counter though and didn't have a decent counter till about 25 minutes in. At that point, they had a 10 minute spell where they looked better. I had to leave about the 65th minute, rain and a tired 3 year old, but the second half looked a little better.
But clearly the plan was strictly to not let Cosmos score.
