I guess my daughter will be OK with no Spring season, as she will play JV HS, as an 8th grader. I was trying to figure out how we would juggle both HS & RPL

I would hope that the winner of Athena A would be able to play in this division as well. They should be given a chance to prove that they can earn an RPL spot. whoever wins Athena A wins an RPL spot the next year ... Is it the winner of Fall or Spring Athena A that gets the RPL spot? Also, is this a new rule or a general precedent?

Because if we have an entire R3PL team that all of a sudden has nothing to do this spring then we should get on the horn with the respective high schools and see if we can play with them. We have three on the team that are already 9th grade. Not sure how that would work because MS gets out an hour later than HS. See you tonight ;-)

On the one hand, this does have the appearance of a goat rodeo. Devising a competition in which at least 4 of the GA teams (ECNL), not to mention the other 6 ECNL teams from neighboring states, would send squads with largely different compositions from those that actually earned those RPL slots (if they earned them and chose to participate in RPL that is), was terrible terrible planning. Sure, team compositions always change from year-to-year, but not to this extreme. RPL knew, or should have known, this would be an issue. I can understand the best teams in each state wanting better, and more equal, competition. They need it and can handle it. A better plan needs to be devised. One way to do this would be for ECNL to start with a Spring pre-ECNL competition for the teams in their Conference. I assume those teams could still participate in State Cup by virtue of their Fall play in Athena if they were so inclined. The rest of the teams, though, would be the ones competing in the Spring for next Fall's RPL spots.
On the other hand, this Spring competition problem for U14s does not seem that complicated. You just take the GA teams that were in RPL this Fall, add to them the top few finishers from Fall Athena A, and you can have Athena A+. What a great thing to put on your resume; I played in Athena A+!! That could be anywhere from an 8-12 team division. And you still preserve promotion/relegation across the other divisions. Georgia Soccer can (and will) still use whatever criteria they want to determine RPL teams for the following Fall (previous Fall Athena finish, Athena A+ results, State Cup results).
There must be something I am missing.

Because some city schools allow 8th graders to play JV in HS. Loganville, being one of them.

I'm not sure what a goat rodeo is, but RPL screwed the pooch in expanding to U13. Should have kept things the way they were. In their rush to compete with ECNL (and DA?), they inadvertently strengthened the ECNL clubs and gave them all a shot at RPL where previously they would have had to earn it with the second team.

Goat rodeo: A chaotic situation, often one that involves several people, each with a different agenda/vision/perception of what's going on; a situation that is very difficult, despite energy and efforts, in which to instill any sense or order There is no incentive for ECNL teams to do this at the present time. I did not insinuate there would be; I only provided what would be one possible solution. I am sure there are issues I am not considering. ECNL clubs would either need to feel they have no other recourse or they could do it because they want to rid themselves of USYS. Who knows? They could do it because they have leverage. They could do it in a way that makes themselves even more "Destination Clubby." California ECNL Clubs have a solution. They call it the Elite Girls Soccer League. It goes like this: Elite Girls Soccer League

The question many parents are asking-
Why were we not told that there would be no spring season before we committed to teams and paid our money?
Did Georgia Soccer or its member clubs have any say in this? Are they going to address this situation at all?
If not, how do parents address these concerns to Region 3?
It gives the impression that the players are not the priority when no one communicates with them.

Here's the commissioner's email address: charlieslagle@gmail.com
I emailed him about the crazy schedule in the 1st division a few weeks ago and they made changes, so perhaps it was a coincidence or perhaps it was that several people got in touch.

Complaining wont do anything at this point. My understanding is that RPL told the states about this (not sure when) and theyre working on a solution for these teams. I would just wait and sit tight.
So the question is....if you had been told prior to making your payment would your team not have paid?? Yes they would, Im pretty sure a solution is in the works. Lets worry about having a good fall season and cross that bridge when it needs to be crossed

On the same page where teams had to fill out there application, there should have been a bullet/note with regards to it being only a Fall program. (Maybe it wasn't decided at that point). That's why I'm intrigued about the other thread with the switch to 7v7/9v9 and calendar year and when our clubs will begin communicating this proposed change with its members....... Just like everything else in life, communicate communicate communicate!

I've spoke to a few savy parents last night, that had no clue and were shocked when I told them this. Again, you can't assume that everyone knows this. I had a post about this and zizou covered this above, having rpl in spring of u13 without a roster continuity rule is a terrible thing! And if that is the case --- why doesn't anyone know what the plan is for the Spring? This shouldn't have come to some surprise to leadership. These are things that should have been figured out last year when they decided to create RPL at u13? right?? I bet you many coaches didn't even have a clue either.

RPL has always only been 1 season. To them this probably wasnt a problem or something that needed to emphasized It's always only been 1 season because it was Spring U14 and then high school limited it at U15 and up. They should have either kept it Spring for U14 or had 2 seasons at U14. At least we will be able to play other tournaments in the Spring without the RPL schedule.

I agree...the clubs had not clue. We found out thru another club that happened to ask a question about something and this came up and now the information is spreading like wildfire.
the problem is having rpl at u13. yes roster continuity should be a must (I have heard that National League is enforcing it), if you do that then u can eliminate all the ECNL clubs that are having their second teams play (TH, AFU & CF) and didnt earn the spot out of the league. Thats only GA, take all of the ecnl clubs out of the mix and your teams get cut in half, then get rid of the 1st division of rpl and have just the one. less teams, less travel.

What I read in the rules is that the top division stays in it for next fall no matter what. Two teams are relegated from the top division into the first division and two are promoted the other way then each state sends in two (or more) new teams to replace those in the first division. So, the top division guarantees you stay in RPL and the first division does not unless you finish in the top two and get promoted. That's what the rules say, but they also don't say anything about U14 Spring not having a season so who knows anyway.

Well in our case no player, parent, team manager, coach or even the DOC was aware of this oversight. In fact I just asked the DOC and he said he has heard rumors and is trying to get more info but has not been informed officially yet.
This came up at our parent RPL information session a while back. The question was asked if relegation occured after Fall season (like Athena) and the answer was no, we are RPL until end of Spring (and no we won't have to worry about relegation anyway because we are going to kick butt!).
If they can have spring RPL at U13, why can't they have Spring RPL at U14?
I agree that we can wait and see and it will probably work itself out just fine. But this is absolutely no way to run a multi-state subsection of a major youth sport entity.

I agree this was all planned so poorly but I do see the rationale of not having Spring RPL if there is no promotion/relegation in between. You play everyone twice in the Fall and at the end you have your standings. Why do the exact same thing in the Spring with the exact same teams? U13 is different, because they play Athena in the Fall.

It's not like they couldn't get it organized in time. It would give those in Athena A something more to play for as well.

Lets worry about having a good fall season and cross that bridge when it needs to be crossed. I don't care as much about whether the "team would have paid" as I do the individual player. I am the parent of a kid who cares about soccer and puts much of his energy into it. Thus, what happens in the spring is important to us. We cannot simply "cross that bridge when it needs to be crossed." This type of information is important, and SHOULD have been disclosed to the players at the time of tryouts. Every U14 boy had the opportunity to try out for Development Academy, which has a 10 month season. Some did not because of RPL (which they thought was also a full season). I know of 1 U14 boy who MADE a Development Academy team, but turned down the opportunity so that he could instead play RPL. in each case, the parents and kids would have wanted to know this information in making their decision. Even if they would have made the same decision, the right thing is for them to know at the time of the decision. Likewise, I know several parents who would have chosen to play for a Classic I team (with no travel but 2 full seasons of play) versus the RPL structure we know now has only one season. Maybe they didn't tell us because they didn't want to lose the players?

There was a spring RPL because there was no fall RPL The question really is why can't U14s have both a Fall and Spring. I get why they can't have a Fall U13 RPL because teams really haven't shaken out yet from Academy. But once in RPL, they really shouldn't stop until high school forces them to at Spring U15. Another way of looking at it is they have Athena U14 Fall and Spring, why not with RPL? Anyway, I guess we will find out what we are going to do Spring soon enough. What's the old expression: don't worry about tomorrow for today has worries enough of its own.

We have just four R3PL games over two weekends scheduled this Fall (more to come I think with local teams). Add no Spring games to the mix and you don't have much soccer, do you? At this point you wonder if Athena A would be better. At least you get some games in and then you schedule some good tournaments to get the competition you want. Just a thought.
