So I have a little brother who is playing in his local u12 league. It's fun watching him play, but there is something that bothers me. The game is rarely spread out. The players with the team in possesion all stay way too close to the one who has the ball, and several defenders will go after the one with the ball. It feels all pinched and clustered. For those that watch youth league games, you've seen this before. I've always wondered how do you exploit this flaw if the opposing team has this issue? And how do you fix this? Thanks!

Academy or Rec?
Try having only one defender go to the ball with maybe one other close by but not too close. (enough space to react to the ball or be a back up if that defender is unsuccessful) Make sure you always have shape in the back-line. When you do get possession of the ball switch the field of play. Your wingers should have heals touching sideline so it opens up field of play. Try doing keep away drills. As time goes on and you do face a team that plays "swarm ball" you will be able to pass and play keep away from them, thus making them run all over the field.
Always try to play in shape so they can play simple. Simple passes and open up field.
Tons of other ways...Hope this helps.

Train with 3v1 4v1 5v1 to demonstrate how the ball can do the work, and make a defender chase... if you use your teammates.
Keep it simple. Teach them to give and go. Emphasis on GO.... Go find some space on the field, where the swarm isn't, and ask for the ball back.

There are tons more qualified people here that can help but I know a little. Lol Spread the field as wide as you can...like my daughter's old coach said "Hiney on the liney" lol. Be patient, draw them in, wait for the pressure before making the next pass making sure everyone shows for the person with the ball. Usually an opening up front will appear resulting in a good look. By the end of each half, they should tire and make more mistakes creating even bigger chances if your team increases pressure.

I am presuming this is rec?
Either way, implementing possession style play is going to be the way to go (and aligns with ga soccer/us soccer). That will break into four areas: 1.technical, 2.team shape, 3.tactical movement and 4.decisions on the ball. At their age and level(again presuming rec), I would say focusing heavy on 1 and 2 will help a good bit. With areas 3 and 4 touched on once there is enough technical ability among the individual players and a holistic understanding of team shape/roles on the field.
Academy level, they would probably be more into areas 3/4 depending on the team.
