In all fairness do we really know who anybody is? This could have been anyone - a teacher, minister, politician, ultra religious reality personality or Subway sandwich pitchman.
It's really not a reflection on soccer or a club but the act of a demented pervert

Unless a club hires a forensic computer specialist to scour the computers and phones of every coach, there are those who will slip through the background check process if they have no prior convictions. We all just have to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior (riding alone with players, taking pictures, etc.) if we see coaches or directors doing something that looks off.

Agreed....but some background companies are going a step beyond and do social media searches and usernames tied to them. But you're right, if they have never been caught before then nothing may show up

Definitely not a refection on soccer but a good eye opener when so close to home/ near our soccer family. You're right, it could/can have been anyone.

I know our club requires Coaches to maintain a two-adult presence with kids at all times, same as with ODP chaperones. You can't ever be alone with the players. That protects the adults as well as the kids. The background checks are pretty much police record checks, rather than the more thorough background checks required for a national security clearance.

Bad people in all walks of life. Remain hyper-vigilant and protect your children. Shameful that this guy did what he did but glad he's off the street and away from kids.

You're right, what he did was not technically illegal...except stealing the phone which is the only charge they could get him on. But still disgusting...and he was actually having sex with a player, so in my eyes just as bad. And there was also an incident at NASA a few years ago, where the coach molested a player and went to jail And thats just in Georgia

And I also don't think the clubs can be blamed for these coaches. but in the AFU case i did hear that some other coaches knew it was happening and they were fired for it. Not saying something is just as bad, we do entrust the coaches with our kids, and we hope that in situations like this they will protect them

This is soo disgusting! Soon as i heard about it...i texted our DOC, he hadn't heard about it yet. Last time it was AFU and now SSA Maybe we need more thorough background checks?? A typical background check is only looking for criminal convictions, any public record of criminal activity - arrest or conviction, fraud, bankruptcy, divorce, name changes, etc. Unless this particular coach had a previous arrest and/or conviction he lied about and SSA ignored or covered up, no background check on the planet would have unearthed a private individual's tendencies toward the obscene or illegal. It really is no different than if your coach was found to have an ounce of heroin on him during a routine traffic stop - the possession of drugs or the possession of child porn are both illegal but unless a person had a previous instance of being caught possessing either, there's no record of it to catch until the person is caught with the illegal substances. Calling for more 'thorough' background checks in this case would veer into searches or violations of privacy. Yes they can search public domains of social media but anything on a device doesn't show up. Private groups or boards don't show up. Unless the porn was found on an SSA issued laptop or device that they failed to monitor or protect, the club never would have caught this either. And employers cannot demand employees turn over all their own personal devices for checking unless they're using them for work - ie personal cell phone with company email on it, etc. Honestly, it's not really fair or right to blame SSA for this - they did as they were bound to do - background check on all coaches. This guy flew under the radar with his porn thing until he got busted this week. Now, would I want him within a mile of my kids since he does that in his spare time - no way no how. But as the title of this thread asks - 'Do we really know who our _____'s are" - fill in the blank with coaches, teachers, ministers, grocery clerks, lawyers, etc, etc. etc. Doing a background check on anyone yearly, monthly, daily - won't catch squat until you catch them in the act. It's the quintessential scenario of the perplexed neighbor being interviewed when the cops find out the kid next door was running a meth lab or porn ring or was a mass murderer - "He was such a nice boy" . . . until he wasn't.

I agree with you and don't blame SSA at all...u can insert any club name in there. All we can do is be vigilant and look out for weird behavior I guess
