Well here it is, straight from the rulebook:
1.45 Eighth grade students may participate on a sub-varsity team of a high school provided they attend a feeder school of that high school.
(a) Students in grade 8 are never eligible for a varsity event in any activity. (b) Eighth grade students who play on a high school team must meet all middle school requirements as put forth by the State Department of Education. (c) An eighth grade student who is declared ineligible at a middle school or retained for academic reasons, is considered to be ineligible for participation on a sub-varsity high school team. (d) Eighth grade students participating on a sub-varsity team may only participate in 60% of the number of games allotted to the varsity team in that sport. (e) Students below the eighth grade are not eligible to participate on any high school team. (f) Students enrolled in grade 8 in a middle school or junior high school which is a feeder school to the member high school may participate in Spring football practice. (g) Students enrolled in grade 8 in a middle school or junior high school which is a feeder school to the member high school may try out for cheerleader at the high school. Eighth grade students at a non-feeder school that has no system high school may participate in cheerleader tryouts at the member high school serving the student’s area of residence. Such a student must be pre-enrolled at that member high school, and once pre-enrolled, the student has established eligibility at that high school.

Kind of a toss up here for an 8th grader. Do you get 10 more games in the Spring season on JV Thursdays or do you just go to your club's regular Thursday practice? Those that say 'the game is the best teacher' might opt for the former, while most club coaches would choose the latter.

For eighth graders playing JV, here are some things I'd consider: - Is my kid up to attending 4-5 JV practices/games plus 2-3 club practices (and 1-2 club games once the season starts) every week for the duration of the JV season? - Is there a convenient way for the 8th grader to get to the high school for practices? - Is the club coach ok with you missing practice on the nights that you have JV games? - Will he or she get a decent amount of playing time on the JV team? - Is he or she diligent enough to get homework done in the car on the way from one practice to another?
I know several kids who played both JV and club in 8th grade. Most would likely make the same choice again. There's prestige with wearing the HS jersey at the middle school and being on the team was fun. However, several had some lingering ankle and knee issues with all the running they were doing.

Curious on actual turn-outs for try-outs. My daughter will be a freshman next year, so trying to see what to expect. At a large school in East Cobb...

There were about 40 girls at our school today in Gwinnett, don't know about boys.

I'd guess there were around 50 girls and maybe 70 boys. It sounds like there were more last year. Some basketball players aren't able to tryout yet so there will likely be a handful more.

Quick question, and my apologies if already answered, but does this rule apply to all of Fulton County, or Cobb, or what? Thanks,

It's a no-go for Fulton County. 8th graders are not allowed to play JV.

Tryouts day 1 Girls - about 80. Boys over 100 Girls numbers low bc 4 are still playing basketball; about 6 from last year are injured but trying out by showing up and another 6 or so upperclassmen decided to quit. Heard a handful of freshmen opted out after conditioning do probably started with around 100
It's cutthroat already. Couple of high kicks and dirty slide tackles as freshmen tried to showboat. Freshmen parents showed up to watch. Coach had them removed so lesson learned - don't helicopter your high schooler
Middle school mom still squawking from what I heard from a parent of a returning boys player. But kid was not there
Ready for this week to be over

Final day of tryouts for us. About 50 girls. Boys were on a different field and hard to see so unsure. Seems all done to me. It's clearly obvious who goes where. We'll see if our predictions are correct and they new coach is all he's sold himself to be... :-) Daughter is ready to be done as well mostly because "Mom, it's really clear they have chosen the teams."

It merely says 8th grade participation is allowed, under certain guidelines. Counties are able to decide on their own whether to allow it or not.

Just got a text from my kid - boys made cuts last night - 30 gone; girls names will be listed on the locker room door by 2pm - if your name isn't listed, thank you but go home - you've been cut. Last night the girls coach said being on the team last year was not a guarantee you'd be on the team this year and that meant every class - sophomore, juniors and seniors. One senior quit last night - probably told she wouldn't be on the team.
three more days of this stress . . .

Curious to know how many high school teams have a 'teacher coach' with no/little previous soccer experience and how many have an actual coach.

Curious to know how many high school teams have a 'teacher coach' with no/little previous soccer experience and how many have an actual coach. at our school - both girls and boys varsity coaches are teachers at the school and club coaches. Boys JV is teacher with club experience - Girls JV is a teacher at the school and played soccer At a friend's school, girls Varsity coach is an exceptional club and ODP coach. I think most school coaches here are either current club or have been club coaches

Curious to know how much it cost around the area to play HS soccer. I have seen anywhere from $250-$500 dues. Add that to your club fees (albeit reduced) and it is still fairly costly.
Had 34 at tryouts first night so it looks like no cuts this year.

Our costs are low $150 plus uniform deposit of $75. Big costs are the mandatory fundraising $300 -sell it or pay no exceptions

our experience last year Girls side - about 50-60 tried out - cuts made at the end. Tryouts were Tues - Friday after two weeks of conditioning (optional) Best for all Freshman to attend conditioning - coaches can see the conditioning but cannot watch them play - he had the seniors run small sided scrimmages when he left. Final rosters were Varsity 22-24 - JV 15-17. All goalies were rostered on varsity. Very few freshman made varsity and the upper level club players' parents threw holy fits. Just because Princess plays ENCL doesn't guarantee varsity spots at the highly competitive schools. Our HS was top three last year in their division - any HS coach worth his or her salt will tell parents to back down. This is NOT club ball and some coaches will bench kids if mommy or daddy starts emailing them about playing time. Trust me - you WANT this Boys side - even more competitive - 150-175 tried out. Cuts daily - pretty much if you don't play club ball at a very high level, you do not make a boys Varsity or JV team at our high school. Final rosters for boys was bigger 22 JV and 24 Varsity. They had significantly more injuries than the girls did so if you made the team, you did play. And yes - it's too bad not all counties have Freshman teams - in our area both boys and girls would field very competitive teams as freshmen. At other schools where our friends tried out - similar numbers but some had daily cuts for both girls and boys. Some schools started conditioning before Thanksgiving - others wait until the first week of school and that can vary by gender - boys had conditioning at our school in Dec - girls started this week. High school soccer is fun - period. No great advantage to play, it's just fun for the kids. My daughter liked it for the social aspect but hated the lack of knowledge by the JV coach and felt it was more 'rec' than good soccer. The Varsity coach is exceptional but making that squad as a Freshman or even a sophomore will be challenging so we'll see the week of the 18th when tryouts start. Oh - we had one crazy woman at our first parent meeting - apparently she has an 8th grade superstar and wants him to try out for high school a year early. Not sure if this is allowed but to hear her talk, he's too good for his club team and should immediately be given a full ride D1 scholarship. Can't wait to run into THAT on the field! NOT!! Good luck to all!!!

No schools in GA have 150-175 boys trying out for their HS soccer teams. Not even Meadowcreek.

Well I know what we were told via emails from the boosters. They said between 150 and 175 boys signed up for tryouts and that 80 girls had - we ended up with around 60. Some do drop out after conditioning when they see they aren't competitive enough. If you want to take it up with them, feel free. I know how many kids I personally saw when I went to pick up my child and it sure looked like over 100. What is your problem with my post, guru?
FTR this isn't a Gwinnett County School.

Well I know what we were told via emails from the boosters. You have boosters for soccer?!? Yes. A board and parent members. You don't? Boosters manage budget concessions website uniforms pretty much everything. Our budget for the year is approx $80K based on dues, corporate matching gifts and fundraising. We have two treasurers bc of size of budget so they keep each other in check and accountable. Apparently many years ago the treasurer embezzled the funds so the school is super careful now
