I agree - not the best idea in the long run but as long as there are professional sports in any field, and teams willing to sign teenager phenoms, this will happen. Some cases work out well - Lebron James - most do not. For her sake, I hope she has a very strong support system and they will guide her to pursue education in the off season. Because as you stated, the league could fold next week.

Is her salary being funded through the league or does the USWNT have their own pool of money which they can use to subsidize their players? How much do you think she is making?

She can be classified as an amateur player, not sure how that impacts college route, but I believe a handfull of rosters did have college players during the summer, I might be wrong on that one though. Salary cap for an entire team is around $265,000 which does not include allocated player (USWNT players) Allocated Players The term “Allocated Player” refers to a Player who is designated by her federation (FMF, CSA and U.S.) to play in the League. Allocations Each NWSL Team shall be allotted Allocated Players by the League. Allocated Players are determined by individual federations (Canada, Mexico and United States). Allocated Players’ salaries are generally paid to the League by the respective federations and do not count against the Salary Cap. Allocated Player housing will be provided by the Team for non-U.S. Allocated Players and counts against the Team Housing Cap. For Teams that receive fewer than the full complement of Allocated Players, salary relief may be provided at the discretion of the League. In the event a Team has more than the full complement of Allocated Players, that Team will provide back to the League a set salary amount to be distributed to the Teams that do not have their full complement of Allocated Players. Any additional Salary Cap relief may be provided at the discretion of the League. www.nwslsoccer.com/home/about/732760.html

Wow. She had a full ride to UCLA. We watched her play with her club team in Phoenix and she is amazing. Unbelievable first step. Still, I hope she doesn't forgo her education.

Soccer parents can't step out of the picture even for someone like Mallory Pugh? Good golly.
How can this be anything other than a screw-up by the Fed? The Fed was making this deal right? The Fed was planning on including her in the allocation pool which means they were going to be paying her. The Fed must have arranged this in advance. So either they were slack on due diligence or Pugh decided against it. Regardless, if the family decided against it that comes back to the Fed screwing up. Before you make something like this public you need to know the deal.
I think she would have struggled in the NWSL. She is pretty darned good for a 17 year old U20. Really really good. Like amazing good. But not sure she would have played much for that team. Thorns are deep, especially up top. And it's not like they have a B team where she could have developed by playing big minutes. There are also some big fast physical defenders in that league. Those are grown women who are trying to make a living out there. She could have ended up broken like a toothpick.

Ireland are not a good side. And that is being kind. But Mallory Pugh showed why people are excited about her. She is a bit Necib-like, don't you think? Sidney Leroux has no chance to make a team if it comes down to a choice between her and Pugh. Pugh had the best feet and ball skills out there. She does have an amazing first step. And she was not overwhelmed by the moment. I still think against real defenders like at Olympics or in NWSL she would have problems right now. But she, along players like Rose Lavelle, Horan, and Ashley Sanchez, does give one hope for the future.

No question. Her touch was perfect! And notice how she got it and quickly looked to give it up. She's special.
I was crazy impressed with her!!

Love the Necib reference also, one of the truly best players in the world. It was just a breath of fresh air to see a girl playing simple soccer, quick touches, and being able to receive and settle a ball at her feet. As much as I like Dunn, she was 100% the opposite of Pugh on saturday, her touch was like a dang brick wall.
