The name change to USA Basketball occurred Oct. 12, 1989, shortly after FIBA modified its rules to allow professional basketball players to participate in international competitions. USA Basketball then admitted the NBA as an active member and made the change.
An 11-member Board of Directors governs USA Basketball. Jerry Colangelo, 2005-2016 USA Basketball Men’s National Team Managing Director, serves as Chairman of the USA Basketball Board of Directors for a second quadrennium. Also members of the Board of Directors are: NBA appointees Kim Bohuny, NBA Senior Vice President, Basketball Operations-International; Mark Tatum, NBA Deputy Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer; NCAA appointees Dan Gavitt, NCAA Vice President of Men’s Basketball Championships; Mark Lewis, NCAA Executive Vice President of Championships and Alliances; Chris Plonsky, University of Texas Women's Athletics Director/Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director Athletics External Services; Scholastic Director Bob Gardner, Executive Director, National Federation of State High School Associations; National Organizations Representative Jim Carr, NAIA President and Chief Executive Director; at-large representative Jordan Schlachter, NBPA Chief Marketing Officer; and athlete representatives Chauncey Billups, 2010 World Championship gold medalist, and three-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Smith.
Serving since January 2001 as CEO/Executive Director is Jim Tooley, who has been with USA Basketball since 1993.
From 2013 through 2015, 1626 men and women players and 185 coaches participated in USA Basketball, including USA Basketball men’s and women’s 5x5 and 3x3 teams, USA Basketball trials and USA team training camps.
USA Basketball men’s and women’s teams between 2012-15 compiled a spectacular 132-1 win-loss record in FIBA and FIBA Americas competitions. Adding in results from the World University Games and the Nike Hoop Summit, USA teams are a striking 151-6. Additionally, USA 3x3 teams posted a 92-15 win-loss record in official FIBA and FIBA Americas 3x3 competitions.
USA teams are the current men's and women's champions in the Olympics; men's FIBA World Cup and women's FIBA World Championship; men’s and women’s FIBA U19 and U17 World Championships; men's and women's U18 FIBA Americas Championships; men's U16 FIBA Americas Championships; and FIBA 3x3 Women’s World Championship, and women’s Youth Olympic Games.
USA Basketball ranks No. 1 in all five of FIBA's world ranking categories, including combined, men's, women's, boys and girls.
Competitions in which USA teams regularly compete include the Olympics, FIBA Basketball World Cup and FIBA World Championship for Women, FIBA Americas Championships, Pan American Games, World University Games, FIBA U19 and U17 World Championships, FIBA Americas U18 and U16 Championships, the Nike Hoop Summit, Youth Olympic Games, FIBA 3x3 World Championships and FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships.
USA Basketball also sanctions U.S. basketball team tours of foreign countries and foreign basketball team tours of the U.S., as well as oversees the certification of FIBA and USA Basketball officials and the assignment of those officials to international competitions, and the licensing of players to play professionally overseas.
A brief synopsis of the various competitions in which USA Basketball teams participate includes:
Olympic Games
Men's and women's Olympic basketball competition is held every four years (2016, 2020, etc.). For a second consecutive Olympics, the USA captured double gold at the 2012 London Olympics with both the men’s and women’s teams compiling unblemished 8-0 records. The USA men have captured the gold in 14 of the 17 Olympics in which they have competed and compiled an incredible 130-5 record. The USA women have earned the gold in five consecutive Olympics and boast of a sterling 50-3 record. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
FIBA World Cup/FIBA World Championship
The FIBA Basketball World Cup, known from 1950 until 2010 as the FIBA World Championship of Men, and the FIBA World Championship for Women, are the flagship events of FIBA competitions. Held every four years, the USA again swept double gold in 2014 after also doing so in 2010. The next FIBA Basketball World Cup will be in 2019 in China, while the World Championship for Women will be held in 2018 in Spain.
Pan American Games
Started in 1951 for men and 1955 for women, the Pan American Games are held every four years (2019, 2023, etc.) in the year preceding the Olympics. Countries from FIBA Americas are eligible to compete. The USA men have an 90-17 overall record, winning eight of a possible 17 gold medals, while the USA women have won seven of 15 gold medals, including 2007, and own a 78-15 record. The 2019 Pan American Games will be held in Lima, Peru.
World University Games
The World University Games are held for men and women every two years (2017, 2019, etc.), only current university student-athletes or recent graduates are eligible. The USA men in 21 appearances have collected 13 gold, three silver and three bronze medals, while the U.S. women in 18 appearances have won 10 gold, six silver and one bronze medal. The 2017 World University Games are scheduled to be held in Taipei, Taiwan.
U19 / U18 Championships
USA Basketball also fields men's and women's national teams for players 19-years-old or younger. FIBA now holds U19 World Championships every two years (2017, 2019, etc.). In 2015 the USA women finished 7-0 to capture gold, the USA men likewise compiled a 7-0 record to earn gold. USA Basketball also fields teams featuring players 18-years-old or younger for FIBA Americas zone U18 qualifying tournaments that are scheduled to be held in 2016, 2018, etc.
U17 / U16 Championships
FIBA initiated in 2010 the U17 World Championships for players 17-years-old or younger and now holds the event every two years (2016, 2018, etc.). In 2014 USA Basketball men's and women's teams both returned home with gold medals. USA Basketball also selects U16 national teams featuring players 16-years-old or younger for FIBA Americas zone U16 qualifying tournaments that will be held in 2017, 2019, etc.
Nike Hoop Summit
The Nike Hoop Summit is the country's premiere annual basketball game featuring America's top male high school seniors taking on a World Select Team comprised of top players 19-years-old or younger from around the world. Played each April, the USA enjoys a 12-6 series lead. First contested in 1995, the 2016 Nike Hoop Summit will be played April 9 at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon.
3x3 World Championships
FIBA initiated 3x3 competitions in 2010 and now conducts 3x3 World Championships every other year (2017, 2019, etc.), 3x3 U18 World Championships for men and women yearly (except in years when the Youth Olympic Games are held), and the Youth Olympic Games that is held every four years (2018, 2022, etc.) and features 3x3 competitions. The USA women are the defending gold medalists at the FIBA 3x3 World Championship and the Youth Olympic Games.
