You probably have seen some of the videos of Barcelona youth players consoling the opposition after they won the championship. (not what the thread is about, but video is below). What caught me as being strange is the fact that they call it the U12 challenge, and the teams are - U12 (born after Jan 1. 2004) Which is the same thing "we" the US is doing and have done in the past for DA. This current u12 class for DA is 2004s. However, as we know for everyone else the current 2004s are u13s. Why does this matter you ask, well I thought, the entire point was to align with the rest of the world -- so this is where it doesn't make sense. I've heard that for 2017-2018, 2006s will be considered u12s which will align with the current US Soccer age matrix etc. However, if you jump forward a year, for the 2017 Junior Soccer World Challenge, their u12s would be 2005s?? Did I miss something, or do something wrong in my calculations? I looked at the 2015 tournament and as expected the u12s were 2003s. Maybe this one tournament is backwards I don't really know, as its mostly Asian teams besides Barcelona and Man City. One other note is the tournament was 11v11. u12-juniorsoccer-wc.com/2016/en/

Yes in theory the age mandate was to follow the rest of the world, but typically the rest of the world only does calendar year for their top top top top top top teams/national teams. Most clubs, especially professional clubs, follow a school year. We had a coach's session with Stoke City's academy coaches who even said all the English clubs followed school year. Though they are trying to get players to the EPL team first and not necessarily the English Nat Team.
Just another reason this whole mandate BS was just a money maker for US Soccer.

I'd wager that it was a money loser, actually since players quit the game as a direct result.
US Soccer is a headless entity. No ethics. No sense.

If this was a tournament and the qualifying started when these kids were U12 then it would continue as a U12 tournament until completion

Could also be if their seasons run jan - dec vs like ours aug - june.
Either way, confusing as heck.
