Coach Jill Ellis is ready to reboot the U.S. women's soccer roster www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/17694256/coach-jill-ellis-ready-reboot-us-women-soccer-rosterIt does seem like what she "says" and "does" have been 2 different things. Her email to the players is interesting though. --- At the back end of two world events we now become a team focused on 2019. I have no doubt the disappointment and feelings we had in Brazil will fuel our efforts and energy towards being an even better team, and actually, what I liked about how Sweden played us, it must now force us to be an even better team. That said, for the past month my messaging has been that after these first two games, we build for the next world cup. What I will tell the federation is what I will tell you, my priorities are deepening our player pool, and playing an aggressive schedule. How does this impact you? Some of you will not factor in our plans for 2019 and I will share that with you in a timely manner. For some of you it will mean you will not be on a specific roster so I can rotate and evaluate other players. But what everyone must understand is that performance becomes the precedent of selection. Whether you have 1 cap of [sic] 300 caps, gold medals or no medals, you will be measured by what you do on the training field and what you do on the playing field in this, and your professional environments. Experience weighs in when selecting WC rosters but, it will be your form, your performance, and a willingness to embrace the tactics, style, and expectations of your role that will get you to camp at the present time. At its base level, this will bring out the competitor in all of you, it will at times be uncomfortable, and hard, but making a national team should be no other way. To make this team will require you prioritizing that your efforts, your energy and your time, to give you the best opportunity to perform on the pitch. The final message is that character will be a quintessential part of being on this team. How you treat each other, your staff, the opponents, and the fans comes with the highest of expectations. Disrespectful or selfish behavior has no place on this team. Jill Ellis

Was that last part targeting Pinoe? I'm guessing Rapinoe and Solo were high on the list for that part, but also it is a proverbial line in the sand about pulling for the team and not self gratification. Hope Jill sticks with this and doesn't cave as it can only help build the team. The rest of the world is catching up with women's soccer here in the US

One huge problem is the financial structure of the NWSL and the womens national team. If your on the national team, you probably can make a career out of soccer, if your not, then there goes your salary. Its probably not easy for these women. But is sounds like the this right of passage mentality of some senior players has plagued this squad for years. There are a ton of players out there that probably deserve some looks, heck look at the goal/assist leaders in the nwsl, ussoccer.app.box.com/s/p58bqdab8s07o5oy9yr17zveesoghqd5I'm not really knowledgable enough to know the nationality of all the goal/assist leaders but there are 2 players in particular that stands out to me.-- Jessica MdDonald and Kaia Ohai. Jessica had 10 goals and 7 assists. 61 shots and 34 shots on goal. I say this, but I've never seen her play........ Interesting thing to me, take Kealia Ohai, scores 11 and has 4 assists and plays with Lloyd and Morgan Brian. One thing of note, morgan brian did not record a single goal or assist in 13 games in the NWSL

People get too caught up in seeing how many goals a person scores therefore they must be great. Unless that player dribbled that ball from one end to the other and then scored every single goal, then I am sure other players were involved too. Morgan Brian is a great player and starts plays, I wouldn't base her performance as a player just on those statistics.

It was just an interesting stat. A player playing centrally with another player that scores 11 goals, yet she doesn't have a single assist. Thats all it was. I don't think people get caught up in stats for goal scorers when they lead the league in a category its very impressive. Its a team game yes, but at the end of the day the "goal" is to put the ball in the net anyway you can and out score your opponent. Crystal dunn was in the same position the year before when she was left of the US world cup roster, she led the league in scoring.
and to add to McDonalds goals, she has 7 assists. Lynn Williams is the other player.

Until US Soccer hits the brakes and stops its anti competitive practices, the women's team will likely continue to drop in the world rankings. Just like the men's team will never reach world class due to the lack of P&R..
Does anybody know if other nations have a legitimate women's league, with promotion and relegation?

I wouldn't read too much into that, no Alex Morgan or Julie Johnston either.

I wouldn't read too much into that, no Alex Morgan or Julie Johnston either. Maybe, but I think both of them have been dealing with physical issues. Rapinoe should be healthy and ready to go now. Was not the case for Olympics.
