Interesting that those coaches would leave DDY mid year. I wonder if some players followed them. A Jan 25 announcement didn't leave much time to pull together teams prior to the spring season starting.

You mean the one that became "Chiefs" when SSA gobbled up so many clubs.. and they wanted no part of it?

The Chiefs club was Cobb FC East for a while but those two coaches weren't at Chiefs until later.

At least when one club gobbles up another, there are some players to start with. Starting as a completely new branch seems difficult. Inter Atlanta has a strong academy program in that area. DDY has done a nice job building up academy/select numbers. It's going to be tough to pull players away from other clubs to build up strong numbers.

Yeah crazy that Tony and Christie have been fired from every Dekalb club so they go out and pseudo create their own so they don't get fired again. Should be interesting to see if they have anyone follow them come tryouts.

Starting from scratch isn't easy, especially when so many fields are gobbled up.

It sounded like DDY is trying to take a step back from Super Y and trying to be competitive at the highest levels (and get back to being more in line with the "Y" all for fun and fun for all type mentality).

That's a shame, I will always have a fondness for the DDY soccer program, I ran the program from 2000-2004 and started their first ever Academy program. It was always a struggle to provide a platform for the kids that wanted a more intensive experience and try to stay in line with the YMCA's philosophy, they were akways in stark contrast to each other. When I started there we he had about 450 seasonal participants up to 1400-1500 participants a season when I left in 2004. Now it's under the MAYS umbrella I believe.

The real question is why they've been with every Dekalb club and let go... any insight there? And with starting their own thing, would that past even matter anymore?

The Chiefs club was Cobb FC East for a while but those two coaches weren't at Chiefs until later. Cobb East (The Chiefs), although under the Cobb FC banner for GA soccer were really a separate program run by the McNabbs. They have been moderately successful especially considering the locationand local competition. They made a wise choice in not joining the SSA umbrella when Bill Rucker came knocking and managed to get their own affiliation with GA soccer.

DDY is not under the MAYS umbrella, DDYSC is an independent soccer club that is the oldest in Atlanta, formed in 1968. I know a few of their coaches and the staff at the club do a very good job of balancing between the rec and Academy/Select elements. The club is certainly trying to be competitive at all levels. The club helped produce five Atlanta United DA players and has other young prospects. It also has a U13 team playing RPL this spring. The problem is the club suffers from the perception that because it is affiliated with the YMCA, it is not a serious club. That leads to other clubs poaching its best prospects. KSA and Inter Atlanta also are starting to recruit players from Clarkston and other parts of South Dekalb County. The club also struggles with field space issues but doesn't have the money like Inter Atlanta, which recently purchased 13 acres on Glenwood Road next to Shoal Creek Park.
