Great to hear such a good turnout. I wonder how many of those will be left for UFA to grab after AtlUtd has pickings. That's 24-26 06's out of regular club pool.

You're welcome! And it was great meeting you :-) The next one will be April 23rd for those interested in attending. I was told they will also have a session for the girls that day SoccerMom, can you give some info on the girls session? Times haven't been set yet

You would think about 1-2 from each club. Not sure who the top 06 club is this year or how you would tell unless they all played in the same tournament. Maybe the top team gets 3-4 kids in.

Any thoughts on the 01/02 age group? Roster for games is 18. Will they carry a larger pool like AU does (they have 25+ on their current 00/01 team; ten 01's; thirteen 00's; one 02 who plays regularly; and three more 02's listed on the roster but have never played with that team), will they have a similar breakdown of 1/3 younger age group and 2/3 older ones, and will they also take 3 keepers? It seemed like the bulk of kids at the UFA ID session were 02's rather than 01's but maybe that was just my perception.

Footy, I believe UFA will follow Concorde's model, and I believe this is also what the coaches told the boys last weekend: There will be 18 on the roster, and they will pull up boys from time to time from their SRPL team(s).

So under Ga United, US Soccer did not allow them to use DPs. They said the player pool was too large and it gave them an unfair advantage (not sure why it matters if its about player development etc). I do not think the same applies to Atl United, since they are not a formal alliance like Ga united was with multiple clubs. But I could be wrong.
That was a reason why GA United would have more than 18 on a roster. With injuries etc, its almost essential to carry more than 18.
However, now UFA can utilize the DP pool etc, so they stated they would roster 18 on the older teams. However, given the sub rules etc, I can't imagine a DP getting a lot of playing time unless he's a player they just absolutely missed on.. Again I'm sure there is examples of DPs getting good playing time, but from what I've seen, the top 11 play, everyone else are subs.
It does come down to the coach and their philosophy, many do in fact embrace every player on their roster and if you make the roster, they pick you with the thought that every kid can play. others not so much. From what I've seen, the clubs have no standards and its up to the coach and the coach only. I've seen this actually with every level from u9 to DA, its the coaches call and the club DOCs, and other staff let the coaches coach their teams how they choose to.
That UFA 01/02 age group should be interesting, because their are rumors of Atlanta United possibly also having an 02 team play in a separate league to retain players in the system. This could be complete BS. But clearly the top current 02 team is GA United, you have to figure a handful of those kids will make atlanta united, which leaves a ripple effect on the UFA. And those kids could have a touch decision, go to atlanta united and be player 12-24 or stay at UFA and compete for a starting spot. yes, maybe they can compete for a starting spot at Atlanta United, but you have to assume that roster will be loaded with giant athletic 01s. Athletic is the key, go watch their 18s, crazy athleticism on the pitch.
Yes, its great training with top players 4 days a week, kids do get better. However, it absolutely sucks when your kid doesn't play. Travels to Florida or North Carolina and only plays 7 minutes all weekend. Just be careful, because at the end of the day, the kids want to play in games and buyer be ware, the DA grass isn't always greener. The bigger problem is this: The level of competition that is left over now with RPL being under boys ecnl now.
Youth soccer is frustrating as hell.......

Athletic is the key, go watch their 18s, crazy athleticism on the pitch. This isn't much to go off of, but at least this season several DPs have gotten playing time with Concorde. They've been rotating through their RPL kids pretty evenly to fill in the gaps in the DA team, so individual players aren't necessarily playing for more than a weekend or 2, but the kids they pull up usually at least get on the field. This has been mostly used in the U18 age group, though, since several of their 2017 kids decided to bail on the spring season to play high school. As far as what Atlanta United could be for 01/02, there are certainly slots available. AU's current 00/01 team started the year with mostly 00s in the starting XI, but recently they've been playing the 01s and late-birthday 00s (class of 2019) a lot more. They also have a couple of 02s they've started to pull up to the U16s periodically. GA United's 02s are a better team than what AU has, but that could have more to do with coaching than necessarily having better players. AU doesn't really seem bothered if their younger teams don't win every game, that's not their goal in those age groups. You also have to assume AU will recruit some high-level players from out of state (they've already been doing this and have a few very good players at the club who aren't registered to play DA right now). It's all going to be very interesting to follow. I've long thought that with the talent that UFA already has playing on their RPL and National league squads that they could throw a pretty competitive DA team on the field, and now they'll presumably be pulling in a ton of top players from around the area for their 01/02s. I expect them to be a quality side.

@ soccerhouse - I agree, getting selected and putting in the time to train and then see minimal field time is inexcuseable. What's the point of DA, ECNL? Supposedly to develop. While developing most certainly take place during the training, if you can't apply what you are doing in training to game environment by watching games what good is it? If you are good enough to make the team you are good enough to be on the field, not saying it needs to be equal but a few minutes per half is BS. I personally feel the inability to reenter a sub is nonsense for leagues like this. Clubs that do this to players are doing nothing more than asking families to subsidize the team.

Small group of 04 boys showed up. After warm ups the coach put together 2 teams, DA vs some DA and others. The complete DA team was a well balanced unit as they were super aggressive and seemed to always be in the right place at the right time. They dominated possession and moved the ball super fast. I think it was like 6 or 7 to zero. The other team looked frustrated and tired almost immediately as they didn't communicate well and seemed to lose possession immediately. I've seen something like that at other tryouts, where top kids who have played together for years are teamed against a mish-mash of kids who don't even know each others names. Predictably, it was a beating. And it went on and on and on, leaving the pot-luck kids thoroughly demoralized. It seems designed to favor the incumbents en masse.

I was hoping that it was more for the reason of some kids standing out, from the mish mash team. In other words, if they look good during a mish mash, then that's saying something. I would hope that's the strategy behind it.

I would hope that's the strategy behind it. Hard to say. I have seen great players on the mish mash team that didnt stand out at all. This is a huge problem. You have a player or players who expect/ trained to receive a through ball or one-timers or whatever and if you are mixed with players who "just dont get it" then those type of balls never happen. This could frustrate a player or provide that player miss opportunities (looks). Now put that player with the better group and then you see the magic. So i would for sure mix them up so you can see which kids look good or which kids make an avg player look good. I saw this at the Atlanta United tryouts a lot and you can see the results of the U12/u13/u14 teams.

SoccerMom, can you give some info on the girls session? Times haven't been set yet At UFA will the tryouts be by invitation only? Will players from other clubs be able to participate in the sessions?

Girls are not currently in DA so theres not the same issues as the boys. Will TH and CF prohibit their kids from going? I guess we will see.

Maybe the other clubs won't flat-out prohibit their kids from going but they can make it hard. Last weekend Concorde and AFC 01 boys happened to have "mandatory" scrimmages (not with each other) around the same time as the UFA DA ID session.

Concorde will allow you to go tryout at other DA's. All the coach asks is to be upfront as they will do the same. That's why (so I hear) AtlUtd will have theirs a week earlier than the other DA clubs so whom ever comes to tryouts is up for grabs.
I'm sure all the DA's will have an ID camp for those not in DA but interested.(Open to all clubs) I'm sure most will have a DA Camp before tryouts and then have regular tryouts. Last year you had like an ID session open to all before the tryouts and some clubs even offered spots before the main tryouts... man I'm confused. lol
So if you think you are on the bubble talk to the coach before tryouts and say hey do you think my son has a chance of making the team (current club DA player). He will say I would recommend coming to the first day and maybe you should do such and such the other two days. That way he/she is not wasting your opportunities on finding a team.
So crazy this time of year. Lots of moving and shaking.

Last year one coach of an RPL/NL team told players during tryouts that they had to come all three days or they wouldn't even be considered. I hope the DA coaches are more reasonable!

Should be interesting to see how things shake out. Because it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Atlanta United had the pick of the litter for 3 younger age groups, and they clearly aren't the top team in this city for the 13s and 14s. You don't even have to focus on results, rather shocking.
Just focusing on the u13 age group, it will be interesting if Concorde can convince its top 5 players to stay. If Atlanta United doesn't have its eyes on a few of these kids, something is seriously wrong. Even GA United's u13 team has many quality kids. They play some nice soccer, their problem right now is besides a few kids, they are relatively a very small team which makes it difficult to compete against some of the big physical players.
As others mentioned as well, take all the talent you want etc, but at the younger ages, you have to have quality coaching.

soccerdude10- Also include the current U12's. CF and ATL are clearly the better teams and have a deeper talent pool than the other DA programs. And Concorde for sure is the bigger team which is going to play well for them next year at 11v11. I know is about development but found this very interesting.

Post by Soccerhouse on Mar 30, 2017 9:15:04 GMT -5
No the 2004s will be a single squad at each club and play 11v11. Teams are only allowed 18 rostered players on game day. Its not clear on the rules what the maximum roster size is allowed -- the current rule states this "There is a maximum of 20 full-time players at both the U-13 & U-14 age groups and 46 full-time players combined between the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups." Which to me is very unclear, since I know some teams excede this number, I guess its what ever they define as a full time player player. For example Atlanta Uniteds u13 roster is much bigger than 20.

Yeah the table is for both teams for U12. Most of the teams have played 6 games (which would be 12 games combined)
The 04's and 05's will be 11v11 next year with 18 rostered per game. Some clubs will carry more

Who are the UFA DA (boys) coaches for next year? I heard Ryan will be the 05 and 04 coach next year for Concorde. This is what was announced last month at an info meeting. They did say it was subject to change: U12 (06) Ryan Maurer, JJ Gregoire U13 (05) Velko U14 (04) TBA U15 (03) Robin Dixon U16/17 (02/01) Roberto. However, at the ID session last weekend they said this age group would be coached by Robin, but I don't know if Roberto would do the U15 team or what. Boys Academy Director: Iggy Technical Director: Roberto Goalkeeper coach: Gaucho High Performance Development: Felix I hope someone else can fill in the blanks. Thanks!

Glad to see Robin in this mix. I met him a few years ago at a local futsal court doing private training (for somebody else, we were just playing pickup earlier) and I really was impressed by his work, and his words.
