At practice the other day, I heard a bunch of parents talking about all the extra training and actions they are putting their kids through prior to training. Extra workouts with a particular coach, watching their nutrition, jogging in the neighborhood, etc. Anyone buy in and if so what are your suggestions, practices and justifications. I especially would like to hear thoughts from those on the forum who coach. I'll sit back and listen. Thanks

My first thought to this post was to just say no but what age group kids are you talking about here? I might've considered something like this when my kid was younger but now he is in high school and between high school games/practices and club practices getting ready for state cup, ain't nobody got time for that. At this point I don't think it would be that helpful for him to do anything extra and I wouldn't want him to risk injury prior to the actual tryouts. I understand that it is a nerve-racking time though and people want to maximize the chances of their kid getting on a good team so good luck to everybody!

I don't think the extra training is particularly helpful or necessary as long as they are doing something.
The one thing I have always found helpful is to go to the little training camps held by clubs in "preparation" for tryouts. I think those are a good time to evaluate the landscape out there and try other clubs and training methods to see if they suit your child better. I prefer this rather than going to a different club each night for tryouts.

A coach at a club cannot take the time during a 2 or 3 day, 90min of practice to work with your player on an individual level. Really break down and coach a player on the subtle nuances that sets a good step over move, or good strike at the ball from a bad habits anyone one can develop in the vacuum of working on your own. Clubs need to work on TEAM tactics and TEAM play if you don't have the skill at the tryout your not going to get those individual skills working with the team.
