My 6 year old daughter has been playing rec for the past 3 years and I'm trying to figure out when to make the switch to Academy. She'll be 8U in the fall. Our son is older and I can't remember when he switched but with his team now having practices 3-4x/week it has been kind of nice to have a second kid with an easier schedule. Would it be to her advantage to try now, or to her disadvantage if she stays in rec for a while?

It will depend on the kid? One of my kids switched at U8 and my other kid at U7. Some kids are not ready for the more strict academy trainings

Some kids are not ready for the more strict academy trainings I think some parents are not ready for the academy trainings either! I think my other kid switched at U9 but that was before the age mandate so maybe it wasn't as late as it sounds.

For us it the was the frustration of the rec trainings and the games. My son would get benched for scoring too much because the other parents would complain. My daughter would get bored at the training and half the time the parent/volunteer coach wouldn't show up and send one of his kids instead.

I say immediately to get professional coachng. There's a level for every player.

We switched too late U12 for both, should have done it earlier with both girls. Same thing, our rec games were lopsided and they would have to sit. Also volunteer coaches mean well, but many knew nothing of the real game or rules, and luckily at Norcross they used to have the Academy and Select coaches come over and run drills and fine tune. That's how we switched, one of the coaches told me we were wasting their talent in rec ball.

If you are at a club that has a pre-academy (AFU, UFA, LSA are some clubs that have this program), you may want to consider that option if you want to test the academy waters before engaging in the full academy experience. I would agree that it depends on the child. You have to gauge maturity, but you also have to consider whether the move from rec will build confidence or break it.
