To be honest the higher level the game the easier it is to ref. Players know what is and isn't a foul, tackles are better timed. Lots of things that happen in lower level soccer just don't in DA as kids know the consequences.
DA has it's own assignor for Refs, except for U12 I believe.

New to DA this year. While not perfect (who is), must say I am impressed with the refereeing compared to the “regular” Academy/Select games. Much better control of the games, not just pulling cards out because they can but talking to the kids and laying down the law, better understanding of the game, better ability to separate a foul from proper, physical challenge (just because a kid falls down its not a foul), etc. Daylight (on average - some outstanding select/Academy refs but much bigger variability). Is there a separate DA referee pool or how does this work? Just curious. And thanks to all you who referee games. Without refs - no games... I'm not as savy with the terminology, but definitely a higher grade referee is required. My guess is at least a Grade 7 if not a 6. We had some games last year where the crew all had headsets and were able to communicate with one another.

I know the crew with the headset. It actually belongs to the center and he gives to whomever his ARs are. Its not the norm, he just likes it.

Headset is definitely an exception. I'm glad when the center ref runs more than 10 feet out of the circle. We had a great center 2 weeks ago. Best center we've had in 8 years of soccer IMO. Hope we get him again.

We had a three female ref crew for one of my games a few weeks ago, one of the best crews I've seen in a while. I made an extra effort after the game to tell them so, shook each of their hands and told them to keep up the good work.

US Soccer requires that the best available referees are used for DA games. The games count higher for advancement than any other youth games. Due to this they attract the better referees.
