For those with HS kids that tried out/are playing soccer for their schools: Do any of your respective high schools NOT allow Juniors to play on the JV soccer team? If that's the case, please let me know which school by replying here - or PM me if you are more comfortable doing so.
Thanks,

I'm not a HS parent, but am a high school coach so I'll answer the question to see if it helps at all. First off, there is not any kind of GHSA rule against playing Juniors or Seniors on JV. With that being said, coaches typically don't like to keep Juniors or Seniors on JV because the JV's purpose is for developing future Varsity players. So typically I only keep a Junior in the program if they are at least going to be a reserve bench player for the Varsity. The only exception is if I have a ton of Seniors one year and I feel a Junior has a strong chance to be a large contributor on Varsity as a Senior. So in a lot of cases I find myself trying to decide between keeping a Freshman who isn't currently better than a Junior, but shows potential that he could be better as a Junior than a Junior currently is, or a Junior that isn't one of the top 18 players in the program. So each year it does get harder for a player to make the program. It's fairly easy for a Freshman to make it, and I currently have more Freshman than any other class. Sophomore year they still have a strong chance if they have shown growth from their Freshman year and they are solid players. Junior year it becomes more difficult, and as Seniors they have to show they are in the top 14 players in order to be kept. This resulted in 4 Juniors and 1 Senior being cut that were previously in the program.

I get it but that's rough to cut a senior who has put 3 years into the program.

Mightydawg, you are correct that it is harsh to cut a Senior, and that is why I typically try to do it their Junior year. The one Senior I cut was one that I kept on JV last year hoping that he would improve enough to help Varsity as a Senior, but unfortunately he didn't.
