We all commented or lamented privately on the lack of meaningful minutes for Carleton last week amd I was surprised to see that no one on the forum was cheering his 15+ minutes last night with the gorgeous assist to Martinez!!! The crowd gave him a great welcome on the pitch and I think the roar from that goal was louder than the rest and not just because of Martinez' s hat trick! Kudos to Tata for playing the kid and to Carleton for making the most of his time.

His assist was amazing! But settle an argument for me— do you think he was responsible for the Vancouver goal that occurred right before that assist?

Well he did make a mistake right before that. I actually reached down to get my drink the second we lost possession in the offensive third (thinking it was a decent time to take my eyes off of the game) and then I heard the groans so I didn't see the whole play that lead to the goal. It was very quick counter and I guess a shot from very far out from what I saw on the replay screen. Sorry I am no help here.

My husband said it wasn't a shot from far out. So I couldn't even tell on the replay what happened after we lost possession. Sorry.

Andrew Carleton did lose the ball, but I don't think I would put the blame of that goal on him. He lost the ball in the Whitecap's 18, leading to 5 AU players in their box and Nagbe just outside, they mounted a counter-attach and only had 4 players to go through. With a quick lob of the ball over our players and with our style of playing high, the captain - Parkhurst should have told Perez to pinch in as insurance against just the play that left Parkhurst one on one with Hurtado instead of the prefered 2 v 1. Those are odds that Hurtado will win most times, especially going up against someone 7 years older. If I had to blame someone, I'd blame Guzan and Parkhurst. Guzan because he knows better and has the best view and should have yelled for Perez to track back and Parkhurst because again experience, plus your position calls for you to be the captain of the defense and you're the actual team captain too.

Yes, Carleton lost the ball and the turnover led to the goal but the tradeoff, in my opinion, is worth it. The younger players have to know they will get a shot at some playing time and the goal came in the 85th minute. We had a three-goal lead and Vancouver was a man down. They weren't going to come back. Then Carleton provides that lovely assist for the 4th goal.
I also think this was the only time that Parkhurst was too far forward and only slightly. There were multiple long balls like that by the Whitecaps and Parkhurst played them all correctly except that one, where Hurtado just had a half-step on him and so was able to get past. Personally, I think Parkhurst is the unsung hero of Atlanta United's defense. I can only wonder how he would have done had he been called up to the USMNT during World Cup qualifying.

It’s funny how most of us reacted —
You critique him like he’s one of your kids! How many times has your kid made a mistake on one end, a bunch of things Happen and your team conceded a goal and your kids initial mistake set of the string of events.
I think that’s what’s special about Carleton and makes him unique - he’s a product of Atlanta. Many coaches and clubs have been a part of his developemt and nuturing. Honestly not screwing him up!! Many of us have kids that have played with him, against him or with or against one of his siblings.
Not going to say I teared up when he entered the game, but it was damn cool!!! So cool to see so many fans appreciate him.
I’d love to wake up one morning though and flip on the tv one early sat morning and see him playing for an EPL team.

The first (and perhaps only) person I saw to place blame on Carleton for that giveaway was, well, Carleton himself.
FWIW, Tata was asked about it post-game and he had this to say:
“Nobody can say that Carleton was guilty or responsible for that goal because he is losing the ball in the opposing 18, it’s not like he is losing the ball at midfield. That is not the reason they scored on us. They scored because we were marking poorly and the ball still had to go 90 meters from where he lost the ball.”
So, spot on Futsal Gawdess.

I sometimes think that defenders like to place blame on forwards and midfielders for goals when someone loses possession in the offensive third. I missed what happened after he lost it as I said earlier in this thread, but I have never really understood that mentality. One of my daughter's friends got blamed for that by her coach a few weeks ago (she is 12 years old playing 11v11). Like Carleton she was inside the attacking 18. I bet she wished her coach would react like Tata did!
