Anyone have good or bad feedback on his tenure at UFA? Thanks!

Never had him as a coach for my son but what I've seen I've liked. If he's walking on to a field and you are anywhere near the entrance he will walk over, shake your hand and say hello. He's passionate about soccer, working with the kids, and has a good reputation among the people I know.

Roberto is a great coach, and more importantly, he is a wonderful person. He has a vision for his players that goes beyond their ability to play on the field. He wants his players to be gentlemen off the field. He trained a lot of the boys in the older AU teams, and he trained attitudes as well as skill. Arrogance has no place on his teams. Now, did it stick for all players? No. But, I know a lot of the players from his younger teams (when he coached u10/11), and they all seem to be fine young men in addition to good players. Off the field, Roberto is always willing to talk with you candidly about your player, and he never sugarcoats anything. I go to him for advice with my kids’ soccer development before anyone else because I have a great deal of respect for him. He has always been very professional and given sound advice (even when I didn’t take it). He tries to put the needs of the child first.

He cares about the kids that's for sure --- he knows the goal is to develop them into good quality men vs chasing the dream of becoming a soccer professionals. Quality of the kid comes first.
Roberto is doing a fabulous job, TA really didn't leave him a good situation, after ignoring girls soccer for years and being absent from the club the last year before and during the UFA merger. That being said, Roberto 'trained' for years under TA and there is no question he learned a lot from him over the years.
He's coached older girls and boys at almost every age group and level. He runs a quality training session and pushes the kids and expects them to respect all coaches at the club. Every kid shakes his hand when they see him and enter the field.

Sounds like some of the coaches need to take a page out of Roberto's book. Good for him for getting such great reviews from parents.

If you are lucky enough to have RS as a coach/trainer please take full advantage of the attributes he will pour into your child. He teaches them both soccer and life skills. He is very good at spotting talent and more importantly getting the player to learn how to use and harness that talent. He is also very honest. Most coaches will sometimes tell you what they think you want to hear, or hold your child back for their own selfish "winning" needs. Not Roberto, he will push you out the door to bigger and better things even if that means upending his own team. He's humble, very knowledgeable and knows the game both as a player and coach. I believe his father is/was in charge of the National Youth teams for Costa-Rica, so Roberto learned a lot of his coaching and development of young talent there. All in all, I would definitely recommend Roberto to you for both boys and girls.

I have heard RS is a great coach and also has great connections. We would have been there for DA and had him as a coach, but it was just too far. I don't regret the decision yet, but I am starting to.

I can only echo the sentiments of the previous posters. RS doesn't just talk the talk, he walks it every day. We were lucky to have him as a coach for several years. The kids on his team do not want to disappoint him on OR off the field. In this world of soccer madness, he's a calming factor no doubt.

Guess Velco's brash style isn't going over well with the current crop of players and parents. I think he would be better suited coaching older boys who can drown out everything else and focus on his experience and benefit from his tutelage.

He coaches future academy and though he can be blunt, the little kids seem to like him. I have heard people say he is intimidating, but I have not felt that way. Some coaches just have an age group/gender that they seem to relate better to. RS sounds like the perfect coach. Too bad everyone can't be like that.

I only know of 1 or two kids/parents who didn't like Velko and its only because he's so blunt. He coached my kid and he loved him, most parents whose kids he coaches are very happy when they get him. He works them hard. I think he does better with the younger kids, a lot of older kids have already stuck to their ways and no matter who coaches them they wont change.

Yes!! if he sees you anywhere he always makes sure to come over and say hello and shake your hand. Also if any of his kids or players are around he makes sure they do the same.
