Our family will be out of the country during tryouts. What are the rules regarding contacting coaches/clubs beforehand? What could I do as a parent to ensure that my child has a place to play at? I know there are "Recruiting" rules in place, but can I contact others? What would you do?

You are allowed to contact new clubs shortly before tryouts. I think it is close to two weeks. Some clubs have "pre-tryout camps" which could be used as a kind of tryout for your kid. Otherwise you could contact their DOC and let them know you will be gone and they may have your kid in for a private tryout before you leave. It would be better to do everything before you go.

To clarify -- your intentions are to leave your current club?

Why can’t a parent contact any club at any time? We pay to play. Yes, I understand we are signed for the year but again, why can’t we contact now?

Why can’t a parent contact any club at any time? We pay to play. Yes, I understand we are signed for the year but again, why can’t we contact now? People do it all of the time. The recruiting rules are more geared toward the clubs not talking to you than vice versa, but all contact can get people into trouble if someone takes offense. Honestly I agree with you. We pay for a service and should be able to decide what is best for our kid with a good bit of knowledge being required to make that decision. It seems a bit unfair to the parents and the players that we are limited on when we can communicate. I also think it is unfair that we don't know who the coaches are for teams until too close to the season starting. How do you find out if it is the right coach for your child when you have little time to inquire?

I was told by the coach that nothing is guaranteed. High level playing team. So to ensure the kid has a place to play, I know have to cover bases.

First thing first - talk to coach again.
Then if you don’t hear what you need to hear - go above him.

Did you ever sign an agreement regarding "the rules" about contacting clubs?
Me neither.

Did you ever sign an agreement regarding "the rules" about contacting clubs? Me neither. Yes you did. When you paid to play under Georgia Soccer. As they tell us coaches, ignorance is no excuse for not knowing the rules.

As they tell us coaches, ignorance is no excuse for not knowing the rules. If you never have seen Georgia Soccer Rules and regulations it can be found here: www.georgiasoccer.org/FileDownload.aspx?D=nuiMZvXX3zKgcr3PXm4rETvVA3fdVwF0NLfD+nP0rU4=At the bottom of the first page it states: Lack of knowledge of these rules will not relieve any coach, team official, parent or player of a team participating in or seeking entry into these programs from the responsibilities and possible penalties herein. All member affiliates, teams, team officials, parents and players, by their participating in Georgia Soccer youth program play, agree that they are bound by these rules. There should be something in your registration when signing your player that must point to these rules. As you just read it is not for Coaches and Players.

My favorite is when coaches get their teams parents to do their dirty work in season. GSA are notorious for this.....

If my kid was looking for a new team, I'd appreciate their parents input good or bad. This may let a parent know if you'd want to move to the club. Parents spend a lot of time together after all.

Honestly, if you are looking to go to a new club, in addition to all the things mentioned in this thread to do with the club, coaches, training, facilities, please take a moment and go by the fields during practice and games and speak to parents. You get a true feeling for the club that way. Most parents will be honest with you as to why you should and should not come their club. As about the items that don't show up on any website, email, flyer or official statement. Things like, never have coach x train your kids. Your kid will have a hard time breaking in with Team Y, because they are very clickish and don't allow in outsiders regardless of your skill level.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It sucks that I have to do this, but it is what it is.
