I would be interested to know if ODP Region Camp is worth the expense. Anyone have thoughts about it?
Thanks in advance.

I coach with the 2002 Boys ODP Team and have been to Region Camp a number of times. Say what you will about ODP's place in today's soccer landscape but Region Camp is a valuable experience in terms of exposure to other coaches, training environments and playing teams from different states/countries...see Houston Dynamo DA, AU DA, Monterrey and others in the night pool games.
If you have specific questions let me know

For the boys yes, for the girls no. I mean come on Region 3 stop being sexist and sending the boys to the University of Alabama and then sending the girls to who knows where University of Montevallo. That’s like sending one group to the trade school in Athens and then sending the other to Atlanta United. 🤦🏻♂️
Ps. THWG....😂

Oh and they played a LOT of soccer, too. It is physically and mentally exhausting but even she admitted the training and experience was great and she was glad she went. She's just as happy to be aged out now but it was a good ride.

Absolutely, depending on what you want to get it of it. They get away from their parents in a boys/girls only environment, treated like adults in a fashion (wake up on their own, figure out how to coordinate meals and practice times, etc..) and so much more. The kids meet other players that are typically opponents that they wouldn't ordinarily socialize with due to location. The exposure to other clubs and coaches is extensive and for the most part very informative and enjoyable. Truthfully I can't say my kid gained much in skills (it's only 5 days) but he came home a changed boy. He was extremely proud to have managed on his own, had a couple new jerseys from the trade, happy with his performance and training, and wants to return every year he is able to. As a rising U14 at the time, camp was kind of his intro into young adulthood. He has chosen ODP camp as his new vacation destination instead of the beach if that says anything.

Just a different perspective, my son was not that impressed. Facilities and food were good and the opportunity to hang out with friends was fun. The amount of soccer training was less than you would think so $/hr soccer training was really high. They had a game in the morning and the teams were so big that he played only half a game. Most of the day was just hanging out. They had a evening practice session for 1.5 hrs. If you were one of the few boys selected to play in the evening game, then you got to play otherwise you watched or hung out. Only a handful of boys from GA got selected for the evening game. It was about 3.5 days and a few are selected as holdovers to stay a couple of extra days. If you are one of the few selected them you get a lot of training. Otherwise it’s 800 for 3 days of about 2-2.5 hrs of training a day. Not sending him this year, I figured I could get a lot of private/small group training to develop his own skills. He likes Ralph Lundy where they spent a lot more time on the field and in training.

Maybe the amount of teams boys vs girls at Region camp necessitates a larger venue?

Its a mixed training and then a scrimmage between each other. Theyre separated into teams when they're chosen

What age group is your player?
For the younger age group, anybody who wants to go to region trials can go. For the older ones, the coach selects 1 or 2 teams, so it is an honor to be chosen.

Dear rocko1989, This is an excellent question. ODP camps are designed to provide high level competition and training for participating players. During this training and competition, players who are capable of performing at a higher level of play are identified for possible national camp, or pool or team participation. In Georgia, players have been selected to attend interregional events in Florida and Arizona as well as international friendlies with youth academies in Costa Rica, Argentina, Portugal, Italy, and many more countries. If your player has a chance to attend region camp (or region trials, as we now call it), I would highly encourage it. Not only is it an opportunity to train with other high-level players and coaches, but he or she may be selected to travel to one of these exciting events. Your player might just be the next Abby Wambach or Tim Howard or a number of other professional players who participated in the US Youth Soccer ODP program. The region puts out requests for bids from different colleges, and for the past few years, the Alabama schools (University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and University of Montevallo for boys and girls respectively) won the contracts to hold the region events. Right now, the boys’ region trial event is twice as large as the girls’. It also takes place over two weeks instead of one. While it would be nice to have both the boys’ and girls’ events at the same college, it has not always worked out logistically.
