Lost River Green fields.....
Any truth?

With the amount of development in that area I wouldn’t be surprised. But hadn’t heard anything. That would be a huge blow to building more soccer fields in south Gwinnett though.

Where else would they go?

It has been in the making for years as there has been a for sale sign up for commercial use. It appears the front area/entrance a business building is being built at the moment. AFU already lost Gary Pirkle Park a few years ago, but they still have Bunten and George Pierce Park.

So technically Scott Hudgens Park aka Rivergreen, is owned by the Georgia Dept of Natural Resources so I doubt the whole property was sold. Maybe just the parts the city of Duluth owns. But DNR selling green space for commercial use would go with how our current govt considers global warming and our environment 🤷🏻♂️

They're being sent to Bunten park for the rest of the Super Y games. Not sure how the new season will go That is not related to any sale, but rather the condition of Scott Hudgens. We played a Super Y game there last Tuesday. The grass was so long the ball could barely move. They were supposed to cut the grass on Wed. but instead cancelled games that night then moved games this weekend to Bunten. Not sure why cutting grass became a big issue. I know they had some sprinkler issues on the field as well.

They better not do the same at their other 2 locations or the county can take them away too. My friend's kid played there on Wed and complained about the fields.

No you did not. Just your comment after sale comments above, so just clarifying across the board that the two were not connected. Did not mean to put words in your mouth or imply anything.
And agree based on this past week the fields definitely were very crappy.

Buddies son plays u17 ECNL. Showed up for tryouts...coach they thought they were having wasn't there. How does that happen? This is the same group that had 4 coaches at u13.

I believe AFU tries their best to take care of them. Scott Hudgens Park fields have always looked good in years past in beginning of every seasons, after two months or so from multiple teams practice and games they wear down just like any other soccer fields in metro Atlanta. If true there have been sprinkler problems, possibly this is the reason they have closed the usage of the park. Or maybe since the ongoing construction maybe with the in and out traffic for soccer it could be a safety issue. There is only one entrance/exit there which is horrible! Probably the worst designed soccer park/parking if an emergency does happen towards the back end fields.

There has been unhappy players and parents with coaching and various reasons. Teams change year in and year out at any club, but it seems AFU has been losing more and more top players on top teams recently.

Scott Hudgens fields have been rough for years although usually not from not being mowed. Fields on the far end have huge bare spots with no grass unless they re-sodded this year. I am curious to see their traffic plan.

So... Yes? No? Did they lose their space? It's a shame if so... lots of kids and parents effected.

I heard they will have George Pierce and Bunten Park.
River Green fields have been taken away

They have had those two previously. Bunten has 2 fields and one is marginal with huge bare spots. GP is fairly large. Question is where to put rec? River Green used to be the spot. SH will be harder to access. Parking is already horrible.

As the mom of a player at AFU this year, we have heard nothing of these changes and team camp is this week, hmmm. River Green and Scott Hudgens are the same thing. The fields are Scott Hudgens, the area is River Green complex

So is the description on the Duluth webpage just wrong about ownership? -- www.duluthga.net/departments/parks_and_recreation/scott_hudgens_park.phpScott Hudgens Park is a 47.7 acre park located in the northwestern quadrant of Duluth on River Green Parkway, just west of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The park sits within the River Green Office Park; adjacent land uses include a school, office, and Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area (CRNRA) park land. Scott Hudgens Park is owned Georgia DNR, but is leased to the City of Duluth, and is managed and maintained by the Atlanta Fire United Soccer Association. The park land was donated to the city with the stipulation that it be used for soccer

The space is designated for soccer activities, so if the City of Duluth ever decided not to lease it to AFU, or another club, it would revert back to DNR and they would then have the ability to lease it to someone...maybe direct to Georgia Soccer. As for whether or not AFU has lost the fields, as of right now they have not. They are still closed for maintenance purposes and are supposed to open before the first week of regular season games. I have no idea what happened over the summer with maintenance but there were some issues which are currently being taken care of. Above it was mentioned that George Pierce is closed, and that is true. The county closes those fields every year at this time for maintenance purposes before AFU starts their Rec. season.

Email from coach after my post states "due to broken sprinkler and pump braking , along with heat and no rains, fields are being resodded. Will open in August before the season. Rec fields will be open for team camp".

City of Duluth/AFU/DNR or whomever is responosible will need to fix this sprinkler issue/broken pump as from what I hear it's not the first time this has happened, maybe at least 2 times in recent years. As mentioned before I believe AFU does their best to take care of fields, but to have this problem come up time and time again is not a good...fix it the first time.

Doesn't make sense for Top Hat IMO. They merged already with another club. What benefit is there for Top Hat?

Doesn't make sense for Top Hat IMO. They merged already with another club. What benefit is there for Top Hat? There is benefit for both clubs-mostly benefiting AFU as it seems there is a sinking ship over there. Having an alliance or merger is the trending factor for youth soccer and it just makes sense now. It has been done year in and year out in the past. UFA, Concorde, NASA, SSA, GSA, KSA are all are clubs created by mergers/alliances. Word is that Smyrna/Inter Atlanta/Cherokee is in the works to come together. Where does it leave the mid to small clubs?
