The University of Georgia’s freshman class is in, and the standards for acceptance continue to rise. Nearly 26,500 students applied, and about 5,750 of those are beginning classes.
The university reports that the class of 2022 has an average weighted high school GPA of 4.04, which is a record. The average ACT score is 30, which ties last year’s record. For comparison, the average weighted GPA of incoming UGA students was 3.9 four years ago, and the average ACT score was 29.
SAT scores of incoming students have reached a record level, with an average of 1365 for the Class of 2022 compared to 1344 last year.
“As the University of Georgia gains prominence as one of the top public research universities, the caliber of students we are attracting continues to rise,” said President Jere W. Morehead.
The university says the rigor of students’ high school coursework, relative to what is available at their school, is a key factor in admissions decisions. This class of freshmen completed an average of eight College Board Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses in high school, which also ties last year’s record.

As a non Millenial who’s back in college these numbers mean nothing but the fact that education standards are at an all time low. These kids are coming into colleges completely unprepared compared to how students were 20 years ago. Sorry but “weighted GPAs” are about as useful as the big orange muppet in the DC. 🤦🏻♂️

Stupid question: how can you have a GPA over 4.0?

Stupid question: how can you have a GPA over 4.0? This is not a new thing...the weighted GPA. I have been out of high school for 25 years and I had a weighted GPA. Simply put, honors and AP classes are worth more than regular or basic classes. Where I went to high school an A in an honors class was worth a 4.5 and an A in an AP class was worth 6.0. Now when I went to school we did not have a lot of AP options. None were offered to freshman and sophomores and only 1 or 2 for juniors. Even seniors could only do a maximum of 3. I think the weighted GPA now is different but it depends on your school district

I had a weighted GPA 25 years ago, went to a magnet school.
We all know that the northern arc of the city has a lot of smart kids but also a lot of inflated grades. Are the kids generally smarter or more knowledgeable than they were 20 years ago? Not likely. Everyone loves to boast about higher numbers though.
I agree about it having little bearing on GA soccer though (or even UGA soccer). Speaking of which, I see kids at the academy and younger select ages all the time with better skills than the college players. Where do those skills go???

Wow. My child’s school does not offer this. If you get an A in an AP class it’s the same as an A in college prep. Is this something you do on your own? I wondered this recently because of the college brochures we hand out now at tournaments. Did not understand the 4.+ GPAs.
Also for added fun, Dual enrollment classes are a max grade of 95%. Even if you get a 100 in the college grade book, the high school enters all As as 95. Weird.
