Fell asleep, forgot to record. I've watched the highlights this morning. Figures I'd miss one of the most insane games of the season! Down 4-1 and then get a 4-3 W... including a Josef winner in stoppage??!!! INSANITY!

Well, when their 4th goal gets called back because of a penalty in the other box and Josef buried the PK to make it down 3-2 instead of 4-1, that is when you love VAR!

It was a three minute window, where all things went A$$ up for San Jose. Here they are thinking they had put the last nail in the coffin of beating AU with a 4th goal. Not only is the goal called back after looking a VAR but they see that 30 seconds before that, a deliberate handball in the box was missed against San Jose. Goal removed, PK for AU. Martinez gets his 30th goal and that breathes new life into AU. Yada, yada, yada... AU completes the turnaround and comeback with a 95th minute go ahead goal by Martinez with his signature header on a nice cross in from non other than Almiron. Game, Set, Match, Win AU.

How can you let a game go on for 30 seconds and let another goal be scored only to call it back?

How can you let a game go on for 30 seconds and let another goal be scored only to call it back? Because you cannot stop play for VAR, after the handball occurred the next stoppage of play was Wondo's goal for SJ, that's when the ref went to look at the replay.

The present implementation of VAR is ridiculous. Now Refs just skip a questionable call and defer to VAR.

As much as I love what Guzan does in the community, sometimes I'm amazed that he is/was the US National Team Goalie. He looked average at best yesterday against San Jose. His positioning always seems off, he never seems to put himself in the best position to have a real chance at the ball. I know at times his defensive backline yesterday was lacking, but at least two of those goals he could have had a higher chance of stopping them, had he positioned himself correctly.

Never never never have I liked Guzan as a starter or top GK. Just because he is bald doesn’t make him Tim Howard. Alec is better, cheaper and does more as a native and homegrown Atlien!

Put me in the Kahn camp. Thought it kind of rough that he got bumped after the great start last year.
On Almaron's goal if he had not made it the ref was running in pointing to the spot for a penalty on Martinez. Defender went right at him with no attempt to play the ball.
I was standing up ready to turn off the tv after the 4th San Jose goal. Glad I was slow and waited for the review.

The present implementation of VAR is ridiculous. Now Refs just skip a questionable call and defer to VAR. As much as you might not like it, it is way better than not having it at all. I see it as helping to avoid major game-changing mistakes. Is it perfect, no. Will it change the game for the better, I think so. And yes, sometimes it's better to eat your whistle and wait on VAR - particularly on goal scoring opportunities. We've been trained to do the same thing in youth games - let play continue (particularly for close offside situations) and discuss if a goal is scored. We can always take back the goal, but we can't take back the opportunity if we stop it prematurely. That's why you see a lot more delayed foul calls when advantage doesn't materialize. 10 years ago those fouls were called immediately unless there was super clear advantage, now we're almost always waiting 2-3 seconds to see if the attacker will recover from a stumble and play a magic through ball...

Evidenced by the almost call when Martinez was fouled in the box and Miggy found the back of the net for Goal #3 in the San Jose game. Good no call, advantage, delayed call...

Has there been any commentary on how footing was so terrible for Atlanta United in the game Wed night? They were sliding all over the place. It did not impact SJ as much. It did not get much better in the 2nd half either. The AUFC defense was terrible overall on the evening. I felt a significant part of it had to do with the footing. There were a couple of bad fouls that looked to be impacted by the inability to stay on their feet.

Wait - just in VAR overruled the final goal, their was a hand ball in the box in the 9th minute, game is declared a tie 0-0....

They sprayed the field a lot and they kept just commenting that AUFC players should change their cleats to ones with better friction

I don’t agree. Humans should make the call in real time. If they used VAR for off-the ball cheap shots, and for simulation, and deciding where a foul took place (such as on the edge of the penalty area) I’d be fine with it. Handling should be a real time judgement call. Same for offside.

Why not just robot refs? Like bb8 from star wars? Equipment them with Lidar and connections to other robots in the stadiums
Seems the next logical step.
