“Who: At this time, these tryouts are for males only.” Would be an interesting dynamic if AU were to get into and put a stake in on the female side of youth soccer

They are charging $150 for the privilege to try out. Trying to keep the masses away or simply a ploy to separate some folks from their cash? Sorry, cynic in me keeps showing through...

Yea, I think this is fairly common -- even the NFL used to have regional combines if you were something like within 4 years of being out of college and there was a $250 fee.

Like @soccerhouse said, this is now fairly common. It is still a money-maker, even though in the realm of costs with an MLS it is quite minimal. If they gather 250 young men at $150 a pop, that is a cool $37,500 in their coffers. Some go so far as to charge upwards of $500 to feed the dream. I believe it serves as a gatekeeper for those who just have nothing better to do. This way they know you are serious. My 2 cents, I personally think, if you are good enough they will find you, or you are better served just sending in a series of video clips of your skillset.

The Dream tryouts were put on today at the AU Training Grounds today. Did anyone get a chance to go? Hear the real goal is to help stockpile players for the USL AU II team.

AU II signed one guy from these tryouts a year ago, and he was an all-conference graduating senior from a strong D1 program. Essentially, he was already the type of player you'd expect to be able to compete for a spot on a USL roster. The fact that he had a personal connection with Tony Annan didn't hurt either.
