Red Bulls set MLS single-season points record with 71, move ahead of Atlanta for top seed heading into Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs
NEW YORK (Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018) – The New York Red Bulls leapt past Atlanta United on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T to capture their third Supporters’ Shield following a 1-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. Led by Homegrown Player Derrick Etienne Jr.’s strong cutback effort to put NYRB up 1-0 early in the second half (SEE GOAL ), the Red Bulls became only the second club in MLS history to come from behind on the season’s final game to win the Shield (the other was the 2001 Miami Fusion over the Chicago Fire). The Red Bulls also won the Supporters’ Shield in 2013 and 2015. The Red Bulls cap the regular season with a 22-7-5 record (71 points), which breaks the MLS points record set by Toronto FC in 2017 (20-5-9, 69 points) and matched by Atlanta in 2018 (21-7-6, 69 points). As the Supporters’ Shield winner, NYRB has the top seed throughout the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs and would host MLS Cup if the club advances to that stage.

Almiron is just too damn important to this team. His energy level and ability to get forward with the ball at his feet and attack the opposition is unparalleled in the league. Let’s just hope he gets healthy for the playoff run.
Anyone know the terms of Martinez contract? The fact that Barco makes more money then him just ain’t right. Even if people think Carleton isn’t ready, I’d rather see him than Barco.

I'm sure cheating with a teammate's girlfriend wasn't part of Barco's contract incentives either.

Anyone think the Tata announcement was bad timing, especially before such a massive game? The players have to play but the timing could have been better. Most other sports they may fire a coach midseason but rarely if ever announce the coach is electing not to come back prior to season's end.

Yea, would have been tough for Mexico to drag it out until after the playoffs. The MLS cup is Dec 8th. The season that keeps going and going and going

Never liked Barco. Seems like an Almiron wannabe without the grit or results. Need another 'hitter' in midfield to supplement Almiron's finesse.
I like Nagbe but it feels like he needs more help or more touches.
Overall Gressel is my favorite... hard working, never quits.

They needed to end the speculation. Probably would have been better to announce it on October 1st, since that was the deadline for Tata to exercise the option on the contract.

Personally, I'm worried that we aren't going to do well in the playoffs. I saw in a Twitter post that Atlanta has not played well against the teams that made it into the playoffs and the numbers bear that out. In the Eastern Conference, we beat D.C., Columbus and Philadelphia twice in the regular season, but we lost once to D.C., tied NYCFC twice and, most alarmingly, lost twice to the Red Bulls. Against Western Conference teams, we beat LAFC and Real Salt Lake but tied Seattle and Portland and lost to FC Dallas and to Sporting KC, who were the eventual first place team. We beat the weaker teams but either lost or tied the top teams in either conference.
We need Almiron back and we need our defense to lock it down in the back. For next season, we need a center back who has the vision of Parkhurst but is younger and faster. Hopefully, we've found a replacement for Almiron in Pity Martinez, if he is going to sign with us in the offseason. The big question is who will replace Tata?
