Just found out that state cup in Columbus is out! Playing matches in Forsyth.
Finally, Ga Soccer is making decisions that actually make sense

Good to see now that so many kids have left Ga Soccer they finally are moving state cup to the Atl. Just like Disney for me, once you go to Columbus once for state cup, once is enough....

I think most parents at the clubs on the southside (Coweta/Fayette) would rather take the easier "non-traffic" drive to Columbus versus an 1.5-2 hour drive through traffic to the northside of Atlanta. I realize we are probably the exception rather than the rule though.

GREAT news!!! Let's face it, 80% (I actually would bet more than 95%) of the teams are from metro Atl. For this tournament to be in Columbus which requires most teams to do overnight stays and monopolizes the entire Memorial Day weekend, was inexcusable. I am not saying Columbus shouldn't get it say 1 out of every 5 years (though I'd vote against it), but it is not Disney or even Atlanta insofar as attractions, hotels, restaurants, activities, shopping, etc. The Columbus venue is a huge money suck and more importantly to me, time suck to an overwhelming majority of the kids and parents participating in the cup.

If I lived in Savannah or Macon, my kids would play golf. Cannot imagine driving to metro Atlanta 10-20x per year.

No site is going to be ideal.
Playing on turf will be hot as blazes, but, it removes most weather issues.
They should hold the finals in the Benz!

Ughh State Cup in Forsyth and all on turf fields?!?! What a disaster. You're kidding, right? No one, no one, wants to go to Columbus. Nope. Honestly I still can’t stand Forsyth County. I mean this is a county that 30 years ago was still a “sundown town” and yes somethings have changed, but not nearly enough. As well as as someone else said depending on where you live going to Columbus is a lot easier then driving to Forsyth.

Agree. No one wants to go to Columbus. When 95% or more of the teams at state cup from the Metro Atlanta area, this move makes sense. We drove to state cup for years. Glad for this year that the teams won't have to.

Yes.. if you live in Columbus, it's easier.. pretty much nowhere else.
Forsyth is, in general, less than an hour drive from all but 3 or 4 of the clubs who would be participating. There's AFC, CFC, Savannah, Augusta.. who else?
..and you're whining that 30 years ago Forsyth was a redneck backwater town? Roughly double the timeframe that any of these players has been alive? You know how much an area can change in 30 years? Ever been to Times Square? in 1990 it was SKETCHY.. it's now a massive tourist area.

I think the above poster is right about 80-90% of the state cup eligible teams are distributed in central-to-north Atlanta. There's a reason the big 5 are so big, population.
As far as turf in May...at least there's a built-in weather contingency. I think they should prefer to have the games on grass, but if the weather isn't great, move them to the turf.
And yes, Forsyth was a sundown county (and those signs were up less than 20 years ago I believe). But the south overall was pretty bad also. Progress, amirite? I don't think this is a legit objection. There's rednecks in rural (and urban) areas across the state.

And the south metro counties such as Henry, Fayette, and Coweta. Try driving to or from Forsyth county from Coweta or Fayette on a Saturday/Sunday and tell me if you get there in 1 hour. Most times it is at least 1.5-2 hours because there is always traffic and I mean always. AFC, SSA south location, MOBA, Henry County Soccer all have to go to the Northside of Atlanta to play regular season games routinely, so we all know about traffic that you guys on the northside have no clue about on the weekends. Coweta/Fayette to Columbus is about 1-1.5 hours max and no traffic. More miles but no traffic. Again I agree with most though. Probably 80-85% of the teams will like this move.

True about Henry County and Moba as well as SSA White, but again they are a small subset and don't have competitive teams in ALL age groups. In fact, neither Moba nor HCU even have teams in my older daughter's age group though they have some strong teams in other age groups. Not every poster even KNOWS about some of these clubs Southside because they have never played them and SSA is confusing to many since they assign colors to their locations rather than saying North, South or naming cities or counties like other clubs. Regardless most people will like the decision to play in Forsyth and the turf is HOT at that time but not as bad as August and September.

Lighten up, State Cup in Metro ATL makes sense for almost everyone. Memorial weekends in Columbus were the worst, I for one Im glad to not have to make that drive next year
