It's not about running for the sake of running. It's about knowing when, where and how to run, team quality, and how in sync a team's players are with each other (timing). Also an interesting stat would be the breakdown of running while defending vs attacking.

Is the take home here, let the ball do the work? Bragging about how far ones team runs in a game is a counterpoint to Leo Messi walking around and picking his spots to be an assassin. I swear US Soccer published a manifesto about 8 years ago (pre Klinssman) which included “run less” as a goal. Found this interesting. Also: Sorry I didn’t realize it wasn’t in English.
