UPDATE: First game for the AU team ended with a 3-2 win on a last minute PK by AU. Apparently, the reffing was really bad.

Looks like Man City isn't too good.....probably already out of the tourney with 2 loses on day 1.....
The 2005 AU team will be extremely interesting to follow over the next few years. At u14 and u15 is where you typically see teams around the south loaded with huge specimens. This is typically at the striker position. The big boys I all know from 2-3 years ago have been caught, and no longer can just rely on size -- most aren't playing DA anymore and honestly are average players. I'm talking about kids that at u13 scored 17-20 goals in DA.
I hope this squad is different! some good kids on this team.

For most parents the hardest part to understand is the development of a player does not stop with making the top team at your club even AU. An elite player must truely love the game because the amount of training and development needed in the teenage YEARS is necessary. If the player or parent gets complacent they will be caught and passed. This is for girls and boys. I watch girls soccer more than boys. What you said above is true there as well.

The comments above about the development and complacency is truly spot on. From the couple of parents on that particular team I know, they are already talking about how 3/4 new players are joining the team and already you have the stalwarts bellyaching about oh oh it looks like i'm being replaced. Parents are biting nails and are quietly lamenting about how AU can do this to their kid who has been here since the beginning. Humph, tuff ish is what I say. The day you get complacent is the day you begin the slow/fast decline towards loosing your spot. Remember, AU has one primary goal, FIRST TEAM PLAYERS they can sign or trade(hate the word sell). That coupled with the IDP and you know what AU is all about. Sometimes, boys are worse than us girls in getting into their feelings. Man Up and keep or get your spot back 👊👊👊
UPDATE 4: Quarter Finals vs FC Dallas. FC Dallas had scored a whopping 10 goals in three games. The AU U14s not only beat the team, but carried a clean sheet as they won 1 zip and advanced to the Semi Finals on Sunday. Either way, out of 24 teams, they will finish no lower than 4th. Way to represent the A and the biases against the SE, you beat 2 Cali teams, one EPL team and a team from Texas. Nicely done boys 👏👏👏

Thanks for sharing the updates FG. I watched the games today, & I for one am so proud of these boys. I know many people think playing DA at AU, you should always win match in & match out, but these boys work hard & need to be mentally tough 100% of the time. Happy they are representing the ATL with class and style.

I too watched the games via the links FG shared. To me it sounded like everyone was applauding the midfielders and offense but it looks like the real stars are the defenders. Maybe it is only me but they looked organized and did not panic when attacked.

Agree 100%, I actually said to my friend while we were watching, that their defense is stellar & so calm...it’s tough to be a defender, everyone wants to talk about goals. But let’s not forget FC Dallas was held scoreless their first 0 for the tournament. Kudos to the backline.

I hate thinking like this but I’m just a pain ———— i assume SSA’s 05 could have done some damage in this tournament also. (But like I’ve said before the twitter world was blowing up yesterday with highlights from this game etc). Just wish some non mls teams could get some love and exposure.

Be interesting to see how we do 4-5 years down the line. Man City seems super tiny while we have some huge players. At this age they can easily push people off the ball. I think the true test will be several years down the line to see if we have kept up withe the soccer or somewhat of a size contribution. Seems like we have not looked as great as we get into the older age groups. Maybe things changing now?

Beating a dead horse here, BUT- Great job to AU ‘s 14s, the small ones, the medium sized ones, & the large ones too!
SSAs 05s could have applied, it was open to all...

Agreed FG, but I will take a sloppy 2nd half that still nets a 4-2 win any day of the week. These boys are representing the Atl well.

AU looked to have their way most of the game. Crazy - literarily just flipping around and stumbled on it. People walking in and out of the room - “oh is that Atlanta united, is that the 2s”. “ I was like na, these kids are 13/14 - they were speechless.

I think it’s a testament to the quality of the players in Atlanta.
And no way if SSA applies do they get accepted to the international group. But we will never know.
Seattle might want to work on how to defend - wasn’t pretty after they got that quick goal. Would expect better from them - they got exposed often. Either way pretty dang cool experience for a group of 13/14 year olds.

I’m sure he’s getting some attention. My daughter does/did play for United, however, I think you're thinking of the wrong United. I wish my daughter was at AU. I have thought about cutting all her hair off to see if I could sneak her on but they ask for those pesky passports and birth certs. I do wish they would start a Girls Development Academy, but thankfully that is no longer an issue for me 👏👏👏 p.s. The son of a family member does play for AU, his mom is who feeds me my info 🤪

FINAL UPDATE - I'm not sure about those that watched or streamed the Finals today against Monterrey, but it was a great final, ebbs and flow, challenges, nasty tackles and gamesmanship. At the end of it all, AU came out on top 3-2, topped by a great penalty save by the AU Goal Keeper. They represented themselves and the city awesomely and to top it off, they avenged the Concacaf Champions League loss to the First Team

Congrats and way to represent Atlanta!

So awesome! The pure joy in the video is priceless! Way to go boys! I know they’re kids and so the following analogy isn’t quite right, but it’s sort of like I’m the kind of guy that pulls for the SEC regardless, but wouldn’t cheer for another NFL south team against Satan himself. Those AU boys are so quality and such class ambassadors for southeastern soccer as a force to be reckoned with, one simply must put aside division competition and enjoy a job very well done by the young men! Fantastic!
