Beas bringing it!
"“The mentality of American players, it’s once you get to a certain level, you think you’ve done it all, you think you’ve done it all and that’s it. That’s what the problem is. In Europe, and I’m sure a lot of people can agree to what I say, the youth players when they’re there and the academies are there — I remember one day we’re at training and (Houston’s) youth team was there watching us train and they’re all like this (gestures holding a device and staring at it) on their phones. All of them. That’s the mentality we have "
“My point is, they’re in the academy. They’re 15 years old and they think they’ve did it all, ‘Ah, yeah. Dynamo, OK, I want to go to Europe.’ You ain’t going to get to Europe with that! I guarantee if AC Milan, Schalke, Chelsea, if the young kids get a chance to sit and watch the first teams train, they’re going to be like this and watching eye to eye, ‘Oh, man. What is Pulisic going to do? What is — whoever they’ve got on the field — what are they going to do? How do they play? How do I get there?

This!!! It isn't just the attitude of soccer players! This is the teenager attitude of nearly all US kids with all sorts of interests.

If you’re put on a pedestal and don’t have to compete against those who are deemed “lesser”.. of course you’ll become complacent.
Sounds like a blueprint for mediocrity to me... just like a closed league.

I would ask, why was he looking at the kids on the sideline when he should have been focused on his own play? Maybe that’s why we are where we are.
And one anecdotal story is not a pattern or credible evidence. I see kids at the academy level all the time who do just what he says when given the chance to watch the U19 team, much less the first team. Competition is fierce at the AU academy. If you think otherwise, you haven’t spent any time there.
This story line comes across petty. It’s really not a good look for these old guys, or anyone else, to take shots at the current crop of kids trying to make it.

I do agree kids today are too much on their devices but that just isn't soccer players, that is young people in general. I see plenty of kids watching better teams then them playing. Watching how they play to see if they can incorporate what they are doing to get better my son included. Sometimes parents just have to be parents and take the electronics away. Nature usually takes course once you do that.
