Just curious what other activities your soccer players might be involved in. It seems the natural fit for soccer players is also to run cross country (which is something our son is looking into). However, scheduling constraints (including academics) might force your child to just choose soccer.

Church league basketball - it fits pretty well between the fall and spring soccer seasons and keeps the kids in shape. It's pretty low-stress and not a big time commitment.

My daughter plays high school basketball.
Soccer and basketball are both big on footwork. Being a goal keeper, her timing on rebounds is very good. At her high school, which has not been around long, she already has the career rebounding record (at 5'8") before her senior year of playing - averaging around 10 per game. She also has great hands for catching and distributing the ball.
BUT, I am constantly worried about her rolling an ankle or tearing up a knee with all of those feet in the way.

Many soccer players are good at Tennis because of the footwork. Both sports require good footwork.

Both of my girls compete on a swim team during the off season. They have fun with it. It's competitive but in a more relaxed kind of way. Bunches of year round swimmers on the team and they also use the summer swim league to relax a bit and have fun with friends all while continuing to swim. In fact, one of those year round swimmers (one of the top swimmers in the state) used to play on the Premier team in my daughter's age group at NSA. She's one of those kids that can exceed at just about anything they do. She finally had to make a decision on what to do so she left soccer. Neither of my girls want to move away from soccer though. Although my youngest did a hip-hop dance class a year ago. That was interesting.

Thanks all. I was also interested to see whether many players run HS XC in addition to playing club soccer due to potential conflicts on Saturdays for XC meets.
