How much does this benefit a younger player ? Some say playing with older kids can help a younger player once he/she goes back to playing in their correct age group. I've also heard it could overwhelm a younger player.

IMO, if not in the top third of the playup team and getting significant minutes, better off to stay at your age group. Also, you should only play up at the highest level. For example: Your goal should not be to play against older players. You should play against the best possible. For example: if playing classic 1, you should not play up to play up at classic 2 or 3 level (same goes for Athena)
My 2 cents.

in my opinion if a kid isn't successful mentally and physically anymore than its time to stop playing up. Sometimes play ups struggle more with the transitions from 6s to 8s to 11s more typically not because of their soccer ability but immaturity. But as long as the kid is developing and playing high IQ soccer nothing wrong with it. Don't play up to ride the bench though, your preference as a play up would be to be in the top 1/3 or 1/2 of the team.
