SoccerAmerica.com - Is skipping high school soccer worth it? www.socceramerica.com/article/64388/is-skipping-high-school-soccer-worth-it.htmlsurprised this is true? -- the majority? "Talking to college coaches, they tell me of the Academy players they tried to recruit, the majority did not meet NCAA or NAIA Eligibility. For those kids, being told you are the best or you will be highly recruited by top Division I schools only to find out, you are only eligible to play at the NJCAA level, is sad. Now, these kids must earn enough credits that are transferable to a four-year college if they want to play and earn a degree."

I don't understand how not playing high school soccer affects your eligibility?

I'm confused. Playing high school soccer and meeting eligibility are two different things. If the kid and/or his parents are not keeping abreast of grades and the minimum requirements of the clearinghouse he isn't going to be admitted and play anywhere (except a JUCO), no matter where he chooses to play his youth soccer. It's a real problem in football and BB. Rarely an issue in girl's soccer.

So it has to do with poor grades and scores?

So it has to do with poor grades and scores? Yes. Everything goes thru the NCAA clearinghouse which determines based on your grades, test scores and minimum HS requirements whether you meet the admission requirements of the school recruiting the kid. The coach has some latitude to help get a kid in. As in grades--he can push to get an athlete with a lower GPA than generally admitted in, but they still need to meet minimum SAT etc scores (820?) and have the minimum core requirements (like 4 years of Eng etc.).

I don't understand how not playing high school soccer affects your eligibility? Yea. She is just bringing up the eligibility issue in the article I guess a lot of kids are playing DA that aren't taking the appropriate classes and basic core classes for the college clearinghouse. And she doesn't say this - but most high schools would have some minimum academic eligibility (right?) to play varsity sports. If this kid isn't playing high school maybe it's hurting their academic performance as well. The other thought is the kids just might not be good students. I think I posted a web video that was the day and life of few a DA players in Cali. Basically they did school work on the metro and got home every night very late. School didn't seem much of a priority. Also. La Galaxy is starting some sort of high school system for their academy

If English is not the first language of some of these students, that could pose a problem for High School too.
